Trump Ties New York Primaries to ‘Communist’ Takeover

Trump warns – President Donald Trump accused “the communists” of trying to take over, saying they are “finally making their move” after Democratic primary results in New York that elevated candidates backed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani, including victories over two incumbents.

President Donald Trump didn’t wait for the political aftershocks to fade. In a statement written in Cold War–style terms, he declared that “the communists” were attempting to seize power, adding: “the communists are finally making their move.”

He pointed directly to Tuesday’s Democratic primary results in New York, where three candidates endorsed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani—described as a democratic socialist—won U.S. House primaries. Two of those wins came against sitting members of Congress.

On Thursday, Trump posted on Truth Social that he has been preparing for the return of communists “for a long time.” He wrote, “The Communists are finally making their move,” saying: “I’ve been waiting and preparing for this for a long time.”

Trump framed the issue as a battle over who gets to keep what they’ve earned. “It’s easy to be a Communist — All you have to do is say. ‘I’ll give you everything. ’ but that means you’re taking it away from others that have earned it. ” he wrote. He added, “Over thousands of years, that Ideology has not worked once. The game is on. Enjoy watching!”.

The New York results set the stage for his remarks. In the 10th district, former NYC comptroller Brad Lander crushed Rep. Dan Goldman to earn the nomination. In the 13th district, union organizer Darializa Avila Chevalier defeated Rep. Adriano Espaillat. And in the 7th district, state Rep. Claire Valdez trounced Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso.

All three districts are solidly blue, leaving Mamdani-backed candidates expected to win the general election.

For Trump, the message landed in the middle of a bigger argument inside the Democratic Party. Tuesday’s primary results were described as a shock to establishment Democrats. Van Jones, a former Obama administration official, said, “The roof is collapsing on the Democratic Party establishment.”

Later, Democratic strategist James Carville called for a “schism” in the Democratic Party. Responding on Thursday. he said: “And I actually do think it’s time for Democrats to talk the ‘s’ word: schism. ” adding. “I really do. Everybody’s always said, ‘No, no. We’re a coalition. We’re a big tent.’ And there’s just some sh*t I can’t be in the same tent with.”.

The sequence—Mamdani-backed wins over two incumbents in New York, followed by Trump casting the outcome as a long-prepared “Communist” advance—creates a stark contrast in how both parties are interpreting the same moment.

  1. So Trump is acting like Democrats are literally taking over New York? Like… it’s primaries, not like tanks rolled in lol. But I guess it plays on his whole message.

  2. Wait I thought Mamdani was like a mayor or something, but then they say “communists” like that’s the same thing. Isn’t “democratic socialist” more like Denmark vibes? Idk Trump just loves that Cold War talk.

  3. This is why I can’t stand either side. Democrats gonna call everyone a fascist, Republicans gonna call everyone a communist. Meanwhile those candidates won because NY is solid blue anyway, so Trump yelling “game is on” feels dramatic for clicks. Also I saw something about Brad Lander winning and I’m like wasn’t he already in the comptroller thing? maybe I’m mixing people up.
