President Donald Trump threatened to bar Canadian aircraft manufacturer Bombardier from selling its planes in the United States on Monday — despite the company employing hundreds of workers in deep-red Kansas, where it maintains a major U.S. operation.
The president posted on Truth Social:
NO MORE SELLING BOMBARDIER IN THE UNITED STATES! Their products aren’t good enough! Over 50% of their revenue comes from the United States — They live off American Buyers, American Companies, American Airports, and American Service — All while Canada blocks our GREAT American Banks, and Companies, throughout the U.S.A. They even blocked Gulfstream Aerospace from doing business in Canada — Completely unjust and unfair! That Era is OVER! If they want our Market, they must build here, and stop treating America like a “piggybank.” BUY AMERICAN. FLY ON AMERICAN AIRLINERS. ENJOY AMERICAN LIQUOR AND BEVERAGES. SAIL ON LAKE AMERICA. U.S.-Canada relations have deteriorated sharply in recent weeks after trade negotiations collapsed and the Trump administration imposed 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, prompting Prime Minister Mark Carney to announce retaliatory tariffs. Trump has also repeatedly targeted Canada with provocative rhetoric and symbolic moves, signing an executive order renaming Lake Ontario “Lake America” and, most recently, sharing a map depicting Canada and Mexico as part of the United States.
Yet as Tyson Brody, who works in the communications department for Kansas Democratic Senate candidate Adam Hamilton’s campaign, pointed out on Monday, “Bombardier’s US headquarters is in Wichita and has 500+ employees.”
Brody then tagged Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS), Hamilton’s opponent in November’s general election, in his social media post.
According to Monday reporting from Bloomberg, “Bombardier has more than 2,800 US-based suppliers in 47 states.”
“A Trump administration move against Bombardier could have consequences for American manufacturers that make up its supply chain,” wrote the outlet’s Jennifer A. Dlouhy.
