Trump scrambles July 4 plans with Freedom 250 chaos

As the United States heads into its 250th anniversary, a planned series of July 4 celebrations on the National Mall has been rocked by the collapse of a major Freedom 250 event in Washington. A lineup of invited performers has unraveled after connections to Do

By Saturday, the holiday plans looked less like a 250th-anniversary celebration and more like a scramble nobody had time to fix.

A major Freedom 250 event in Washington—The Great American State Fair—was set to run from June 25 to July 10. and it had been gathering momentum with prominent musicians invited to perform. But once the event’s ties to Donald Trump became public last week. a mass exodus began. with nearly all scheduled acts dropping out.

Among those who have backed away are Bret Michaels, Martina McBride, The Commodores, and Young MC. By the final days of the reshuffle, the remaining performers included Vanilla Ice and Flo Rida, according to a description of how the lineup collapsed significantly in the last two days.

Trump’s response was not a reset. It was an escalation.

On Saturday. the president posted on Truth Social. telling the public he was hearing that “Artists are getting ‘the yips’ having to do with their performance on Wednesday.” He then floated bringing “the Number One Attraction anywhere in the World. ” describing the performer as someone who “gets much larger audiences than Elvis in his prime” and who “does so without a guitar.” In the post. Trump also included personal superlatives and references to “THE GOAT!” and “DONALD J. TRUMP.”.

The message concluded with a directive: “by copy of this TRUTH. I am ordering my Representatives to look at the feasibility of doing an AMERICA IS BACK Rally on Wednesday. Washington. D.C. same time. same location.” He added that it would be “Only Great Patriots invited. ” and promised it would be “a Wild and Beautiful Celebration of America!. President DONALD J. TRUMP.”.

The president’s maneuver lands on top of a wider institutional break from the way the 250th anniversary was originally being organized.

In 2016, when Barack Obama was president, Congress established a bipartisan organization called America250. Since then. America250 has been laying the groundwork for a string of parades and block parties across the country. in a manner that the organizers tied to earlier national anniversaries such as the Bicentennial celebrations of 1976.

Trump moved quickly to create a rival effort. The president issued an executive order to establish an organization called Freedom 250 that he could control. bypassing congressional control—one of the hallmarks described in the debate around his approach to national events. The account of Freedom 250 also points to a private/public funding structure, funded through private donations for public events.

That structure has raised conflict-of-interest concerns. The good government group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) is cited saying. “Many of the companies sponsoring Freedom 250 have business before the government or significant government contracts. including United Airlines. Palantir. Deloitte and Lockheed Martin.”.

Freedom 250’s most visible “marquee” plan was the Great American State Fair running from June 25 through July 10 on the National Mall in Washington. Musicians were invited under the understanding that the event could be nonpartisan—until the connections to Trump were publicized last week.

The sequence now has a sharp edge: an anniversary celebration designed to look broadly American begins as a festival plan. performers arrive on the assumption of a wider patriotism. then pull out once the event’s political gravity becomes unavoidable. And when that collapses into embarrassment. Trump pivots toward a rally with a familiar framing—only “Great Patriots. ” delivered at “same time. same location.”.

Trump’s post also frames the broader public stakes in his own terms. The account describes his vision of the nation as narrow. presenting himself as the center of any greatness that matters. and it connects that idea to other branded ventures—Trump Tower. Trump Taj Mahal. Trump Airlines—as monuments to “an insatiable hunger for fame.”.

The contrast, in the telling, is between the president’s approach and the rest of the country. The piece argues that tens of millions—“perhaps even a majority”—reject Trump and what he stands for. and it urges that Independence Day should be more than “mindless flag-waving. ” calling for “national soul-searching” instead.

With July 4 approaching, the question is no longer just which parade route or which stage performs next. It’s what the president chooses to put at the center of a milestone meant for reflection—and what happens when the machinery of politics collides with the schedule of national celebration.

  1. This whole thing sounds like Trump trying to be the manager of fireworks. If artists are “getting the yips” over his posts, that’s kinda wild. Also the National Mall is for everyone right?

  2. I’m confused—did the event fall apart because of Trump’s connections or because they couldn’t book people in time? Like the article says it unraveled after ties to “Do By Saturday” (what even is that lol). Then it’s like ‘bring the Number One Attraction’ which sounds like he’s talking about one specific guy, but I thought Elvis was the whole comparison? Either way, seems like way too much drama for the 4th.

  3. Sounds like people backed out because they’re scared to be seen with Trump, and then he gets all “America is back” about it. Also “without a guitar”?? So is that like… a DJ thing? I don’t even follow this stuff, but when I see big name artists dropping out, I just assume it’s always politics messing it up.
