Trump says Iran violated ceasefire with Hormuz drone strikes

By Friday, the Strait of Hormuz was already carrying the kind of tension that doesn’t stay contained.

In a Truth Social post. President Donald Trump accused the Islamic Republic of Iran of violating a ceasefire agreement with the United States. He said Iran “shot at least four One Way Attack Drones” at ships transversing the strait. Trump wrote that “one of the drones solidly hit the upper deck of a large and very expensive Cargo Carrying Ship. ” adding that the vessel was struck off the coast of Oman on Thursday.

Trump said damage was done but the ship was able to continue its journey. He also wrote that the United States knocked down three other drones, calling the attacks a “foolish violation of our Ceasefire Agreement.”

His accusation landed as a separate emergency plan stalled elsewhere along the same corridor. The International Maritime Organization, a United Nations agency, paused efforts to evacuate ships and seafarers stranded in the Strait of Hormuz.

Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization, said the evacuation plan would be temporarily paused “in order to reconfirm that the necessary safety guarantees continue to be in place for the ships on our evacuation list and all those in the region.”

The sequence matters: Trump’s claims point to an attack that he says broke a ceasefire. while the United Nations maritime agency pauses evacuations—both happening in close enough time to tighten the space for anyone trying to move through the strait safely. When the region’s routes are under threat. decisions on evacuation and enforcement stop being abstract. and become immediate—measured in whether ships can safely leave. and whether seafarers can safely wait.

As of Friday. the pause from the International Maritime Organization put the spotlight on safety guarantees. while Trump’s post framed the drone strikes as a direct test of the ceasefire itself. The situation remains fluid. with both the claimed attack and the evacuation pause shaping what comes next for ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
