President Donald Trump is convening his Cabinet at the White House on Wednesday as negotiations with Iran press ahead—despite Tehran’s insistence that the United States has already broken the ceasefire.
The tension has sharpened over the past week. and it reached a new pitch Tuesday when Iran released a video it says shows its military responding to recent U.S. actions. The footage is presented as evidence of Iranian forces apparently shooting down an American drone and tracking an F-35 fighter jet after U.S. strikes earlier this week.
An official with Iran’s Revolutionary Guard told the semi-official Tasnim news agency that a return to full-scale fighting is unlikely, but the warning was unmistakable. If the war restarts, the official said, Iran is prepared to turn its southern coast into a “graveyard for aggressors.”
Even with that rhetoric on the table, the Trump administration is publicly holding to a hopeful posture. Vice President JD Vance told NBC News Tuesday that he is “extremely hopeful” Iran will agree to an arrangement that prevents it from developing nuclear weapons. For Vance. the hardest part isn’t the wording of a deal—it’s whether an enforcement system can be built that “gives us confidence that they won’t violate the deal in the future.”.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said a deal with Iran is still possible, but he framed it as a choice point for the Trump team. He said Trump either wants to “make a god deal” or none at all.
On the military front, the U.S. is also continuing pressure. U.S. Central Command said on Tuesday that its ongoing naval blockade has turned away 108 vessels attempting to enter or exit Iranian ports. Iran, however, maintains that it believes the blockade is a violation of the ceasefire.
Trump and his top advisers are expected to discuss Iran during Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting, along with other foreign and domestic issues. The meeting was originally planned for Camp David but was moved to the White House due to weather concerns.
Between the administration’s expressed confidence and Tehran’s claims of violations, the gap is widening in real time—one side looking for a path to an enforceable nuclear limit, the other insisting that U.S. actions are already pulling the ceasefire apart.

Sounds like more empty talks. If Iran says we broke it then we probably did.
Cabinet meeting = doing nothing but headlines. Meanwhile they’re blockading ports and acting surprised Iran is mad. Also “graveyard for aggressors” like… cool, thanks.
Wait I thought the whole point was “truce” so why are we shooting down drones and whatever with F-35s? I’m confused how it’s even a truce if both sides are saying the other one violated. Is this like one of those technicalities where both are right?
JD Vance says “extremely hopeful” lol that’s not an enforcement plan. They never enforce anything, it’s all vibes until it explodes. And that blockade turning away 108 vessels sounds like economic war not peace. Rubio saying “god deal” or none at all… that’s just gonna make everyone fight harder.
