Trump Campaign Surrogate Faces Furious Clash Over Asylum

A CNN panel erupted when a Donald Trump 2024 campaign communications official challenged a progressive guest’s defense of asylum and temporary protected status after Supreme Court rulings. The argument turned personal over the death of 11-year-old Aiden Clark
On Thursday, just as the conversation on Supreme Court decisions was winding through the day’s headlines, it snapped into something harsher—fast.
In the CNN panel discussion “NewsNight With Abby Phillip. ” Amanda Litman. co-founder of the progressive organization Run for Something. argued the ruling was a “devastating way to go into celebrating 250 years of America” by allowing the Trump administration to turn asylum-seekers away at the border and to end temporary protected status for foreign nationals from some countries.
Litman framed the consequences around immigrants who, she said, arrive with skills and a plan—immigrants who “come and say, ‘You know what, I’m going to come as a doctor, an engineer, I’m going to bring my talents to Springfield, Ohio, and make that a home.’”
Caroline Sunshine, deputy communications director for Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, cut in with a pointed question. “Was the Haitian migrant who killed 11-year-old Aiden Clark making America better with that action?” she asked.
Sunshine was referring to the Springfield. Ohio. boy who died in 2023 after a school bus crash that involved a minivan driven by a Haitian immigrant. The tragedy was later taken up by some on the right as ammunition in an anti-immigration debate. even as Clark’s father urged people not to use his son’s death to spread hate.
Keith Boykin, a former aide to President Bill Clinton, pushed back with a question of his own. “That was one case,” he replied. “You’re gonna kick out 350,000 people because of one case?”
Sunshine answered plainly: “He killed a child. Is that making America better? I don’t think that’s my definition of making America better.”
Boykin pressed again, raising a larger scale and a parallel: “You’re gonna kick out 350,000 people because of one stereotype? What about all the white people who commit crime in this country? You’re gonna kick them out of this country too?”
The exchange sharpened into a direct accusation. “You know what, your comment is just as racist as Donald Trump’s comment,” Boykin said, adding: “The idea that you focus on one Haitian person and use that as a justification for a racist foreign policy is disgusting. It’s abhorrent.”
Sunshine did not back away. “It’s disgusting that an 11-year-old was killed by a Haitian migrant who rammed his car into a bus,” she responded. “That is disgusting.”
When Boykin returned to the political thread, the line landed like a final blow: “That shows exactly what MAGA is made of. It’s made of racism.”
Phillip later brought the discussion to a close.

So sad about that kid, but of course people will politicize it.
I didn’t even know the Supreme Court stuff affected asylum like that. Also these panels always turn into personal attacks, like can we talk about policy not murder.
Wait so the guy who killed the kid was Haitian? That’s what they keep saying but I’m confused bc it was a bus crash? Either way that poor family, but like why is everybody blaming migrants overall… sounds like they’re taking one story and making it everybody.
This is why I hate TV panels. They’re acting like temporary protected status is some kind of free pass and then the other side brings up the Aiden Clark tragedy like that’s proof for everything. But also the Supreme Court ruling isn’t even about that exact case, it’s about who gets turned away at the border right? So then why are they going full “making America better” talk, seems dumb. I swear everyone just grabs whatever clip goes viral and runs with it.
