President Donald Trump flubbed a key detail in his ongoing battle with Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) on Friday in his latest social media attack on the Republican holdout threatening to scuttle Todd Blanche’s confirmation as attorney general.
Cornyn has made it absolutely clear he will not vote to advance Blanche’s nomination out of committee unless he gets a written guarantee that Trump’s $1.8 billion “weaponization fund” is legally dead. Trump has attacked Cornyn as only wanting to hold up Blanche’s nomination out of revenge for him endorsing Cornyn’s primary opponent, Ken Paxton. Paxton ended up defeating Cornyn and effectively ending his political career.
Blanche conceded during his confirmation hearing that as it stands now the highly controversial fund could be revived despite promises it had been killed. Trump told reporters on Friday during a cabinet meeting that he wishes the fund was still active, despite criticism from both parties that Trump would use the taxpayer-funded “slush fund” to pay out allies.
“John Cornyn never had a problem with the so called ‘Fund,’ which will not benefit me, but rather the great American Patriots who were hunted down like dogs and whose lives were unfairly and illegally destroyed by the Crooked Joe Biden Administration, until after I decided to Endorse and Support his Republican Primary opponent in Texas, who easily won the Nomination for the United States Senate,” Trump raged on social media Friday.
CNN’s Aaron Blake was quick to point out there is one major factual error with Trump’s claim: the fact that Trump endorsed Paxton at the same time that the fund was reported. Blake explained on social media:
Trump says Cornyn “never had a problem with the so called ‘Fund’ … until after I decided to Endorse and Support his Republican Primary opponent in Texas.”
The anti-weaponization fund was first reported May 18.
Trump endorsed Paxton on May 19.
Furthermore, GOP Senate opposition to the fund has been widely reported to include dozens of sitting Republicans not up for reelection.
Blanche met with GOP Senators in May and was reportedly screamed at by many of them while trying to defend the fund.
“Fiery does not begin to cut it,” Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) later said of the meeting, “My guess is there’re probably 45 senators in the room, at least half of them were blasting the attorney general, and they were pissed.”
