On Friday night. Trump took to Truth Social to argue that the setbacks were not failures of his own timeline or spending plan. He blamed “Vandalism” by “Radical Left Lunatics. ” writing that just like “three days ago” they destroyed the grass outside of the Pool. they also “done everything possible to hurt the inside surface that was just installed.” Trump added that “Law Enforcement is actively investigating this situation.”.
Six minutes later, he posted an image that appeared to show a green-haired protester wearing a shirt reading “TEAM ALGAE,” which he presented as evidence tied to the alleged vandalism.
The problem for the administration is that algae has continued to win its own fight against the new work. The Reflecting Pool is not the “American flag blue” the project was aimed at, and the struggle against algae has proved to be more than the renovation plan could manage.
Trump announced the renovation in April, initially saying it would take one week and cost just $2 million. But that promise has collided with a series of reported obstacles and costs that grew far beyond what was first sold to the public. The same reporting described a larger $14.7 million no-bid contract to apply blue waterproofing material on the Reflecting Pool’s floor. also awarded without other bidders.
