Trump and Xi to hold second talks in Beijing before Iran summit ends

Donald Trump and Xi Jinping will hold a second round of talks on the final day of a Beijing summit, with Taiwan tensions and questions over China’s role in the Iran war in focus.

President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are set for a second round of bilateral talks in Beijing on the summit’s final day. as both leaders head toward the end of a high-stakes visit marked by sharp warning over Taiwan and growing uncertainty about how China could influence efforts to end the war involving Iran.

The meeting comes after Xi’s blunt message to Washington during their first sit-down. where he warned that mishandling Taiwan could lead the two countries into conflict.. The Taiwan issue is expected to remain prominent as the leaders try to steady ties that have oscillated between commercial engagement and national-security tension.

Trump is also pressing for broader international support amid a renewed push to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. according to the dynamics driving the U.S.. while its war with Iran continues to drag on.. China is Iran’s principal oil consumer. putting Beijing in a position that Washington is eager to clarify or leverage. particularly in any efforts tied to maritime stability.

The second bilateral session is scheduled after what was described as a “friendship photo” Friday morning in Beijing.. Trump and Xi also attended a state banquet earlier in the visit. continuing a public-facing schedule that opened with ceremonies when the U.S.. president arrived in the Chinese capital and again before the first formal meeting at the Great Hall of the People.

During the summit’s first day, Trump and Xi held talks at the Great Hall of the People that lasted more than two hours. They also took in state hospitality earlier, part of a carefully staged effort to reinforce the seriousness of the relationship and to project momentum going into the final day.

On Taiwan, Xi’s warning carried the clearest edge.. China’s official broadcaster Xinhua reported Xi saying that if the issue is handled “improperly. ” the two nations could “come into conflict.” At the same time. Xi indicated that if Taiwan is handled “properly. ” bilateral relations could remain generally stable.

Technology and trade have been central to the conversation as well. providing a more workable lane for cooperation even as strategic concerns hover in the background.. Trump said before the trip that he planned to ask Xi to “open up” the Chinese economy. and the visit included a notable roster of top business leaders traveling with him.

Among them were Elon Musk of Tesla and SpaceX, Tim Cook of Apple, and Jensen Huang of NVIDIA. Trump said the executives joined him to “pay respects” to Xi, describing a push for access and reciprocal business arrangements.

“ We asked the top 30 in the world.. Every single one of them said ‘yes,’ and I didn’t want the second or the third in the company.. I wanted only the top,” Trump said.. “And they’re here today to pay respects to you and to China. and they look forward to trade and doing business. and it’s going to be totally reciprocal on our behalf.”

The White House said one of Trump’s goals going into the summit is to secure purchasing agreements with China in the aerospace, agriculture and energy sectors, with the visiting CEOs positioned as a direct conduit for that agenda.

Before their Thursday meeting, Trump also sought to frame the relationship as personal and durable. He called Xi a “great leader,” praising how the two leaders have handled difficulties in the past through direct communication.

“We’ve had a fantastic relationship.. We’ve gotten along,” Trump said.. “When there were difficulties, we worked it out.. I would call you. and you would call me. and whenever we had a problem — people don’t know — whenever we had a problem. we worked it out very quickly. and we’re going to have a fantastic future together.”

Xi, in turn, told Trump that the U.S.. and China “both stand to gain from cooperation and lose from confrontation. ” adding. “We should be partners. not rivals.” He said they should help each other succeed and prosper together and find a “right way for major countries to get along well with each other in the new era.”

With the summit set to conclude after the second round of talks. the leaders’ ability to align on Taiwan’s sensitivity and to clarify China’s position as Washington presses for pressure on Iran-related escalation is expected to shape what comes next in one of the most consequential bilateral relationships on the global stage.

  1. wait so now we are just sitting down having fancy dinners with China while they are literally helping Iran?? that makes zero sense to me. my brother is deployed right now and this is what our president is doing.

  2. I read that China already agreed to stop buying oil from Iran like two weeks ago so I dont know why this article is acting like its still a big question. they already handled that part. Trump probably already got what he wanted and this second meeting is just for the cameras honestly. the whole Taiwan thing is just media trying to scare people again like they do every single time these two countries talk to each other. remember when they said the same stuff last year and nothing happened. same thing every time.

  3. ok so I skimmed this and what I got is Trump is in Beijing trying to get China to help close the Strait of Hormuz which I think is somewhere near Taiwan?? and Xi is basically threatening war if we get too close to that area. so why are we even sending him over there if China is already threatening us. also didnt Biden try something similar and everyone lost their minds about it. now its fine I guess. not saying its wrong just saying the rules change depending on who does it and nobody wants to talk about that part. also the banquet thing is weird to me like you dont have dinner with someone whos kinda your enemy right.
