Truckloads of illegal fireworks filled rooms inside a South Los Angeles home after detectives arrived for a domestic violence call, and by early Wednesday morning the scene had become a neighborhood evacuation.
Evacuations were ordered in the area shortly after 6 a.m. after the Los Angeles Police Department discovered what officials described as a very large cache of pyrotechnics inside the residence near the 100 block of East 85th Street. just north of Manchester Avenue. By the early afternoon. the department said the evacuations were being “scaled back. ” though officials could not immediately confirm how widespread they were or how many residents were affected.
The LAPD said officers were investigating a domestic violence call when the fireworks were found. Marc Reina. the LAPD’s Deputy Chief of Operations-South Bureau. said detectives “stumbled upon a very. very large cache of fireworks within the residence.” He added that “Every room was filled with boxes and boxes of fireworks.”.
A bomb squad was dispatched to the home, and the fireworks were being removed by truck. Reina said at least three trucks had been filled and a fourth was still being loaded, describing the scene in blunt terms: “There’s boxes and boxes of this.”
Reina said the fireworks are set to be handed over to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection for disposal.
LAPD Capt. Michael Bland. the department’s public information officer. said the evacuations were ordered “out of an abundance of caution.” He pointed to the risks residents have faced in past incidents. saying there have been “countless incidents of homes being destroyed and limbs lost due to illegal fireworks. ” and that the department was working to prevent injuries and damage.
The urgency carries a painful history for Los Angeles. In June 2021. the LAPD bomb squad botched the detonation of a cache of seized fireworks in the 700 block of East 27th Street in South L.A. The explosion leveled part of a city block, destroyed dozens of homes, and cost the city millions in lawsuit payouts.

Why do people keep doing this smh.
So they found fireworks in a home from a domestic violence call… okay but did they arrest whoever had them too? Or just move boxes around. Sounds like a mess either way.
I heard on TikTok it was like a whole “bomb” situation, like the bomb squad messed up again. But the article says scaled back evacuations so was it actually that dangerous or nah? Either way I’m glad no one got hurt I guess.
Domestic violence call and then fireworks in every room? That feels like they were just cooking up chaos. Also I don’t get how it was allowed to sit there till 6 a.m. and then suddenly it’s 3 trucks worth, like did the neighbors not notice? Can’t believe it’s going to the fire department to dispose, should’ve been found way sooner.
