In the aftermath of his father’s forced resignation, Jerry “Trey” Falwell III says his own departure at Liberty University didn’t just end a job—it broke a contract.
Falwell has sued Liberty University for $1.75 million, according to court filings from the case. He argues the school was free to fire him following the 2020 forced resignation of his father. Jerry Falwell Jr. but still had an obligation to continue paying his salary and benefits through 2030 under the terms of his employment contract.
Falwell’s complaint says he was fired without cause. He points to attention that followed a Politico article, which implied that Jerry Falwell Jr. was still “effectively running things” at the university—an implication, Falwell argues, that helped draw media focus on his own continued employment.
At the time of his firing, Falwell was making $220,000 a year. He says Liberty University has not paid him what he believes it owed, which is why he is now taking the matter to court.
He is asking for no less than $1.75 million in damages and is requesting a jury trial.

So basically they fired him but still have to pay? Seems backwards.
Liberty loves rules until it’s time to follow their own contract. 1.75 million is a lot tho, like where does the number even come from?
Wait I thought his dad was the one who got pushed out in 2020? And now the son is suing like Liberty was still paying him through 2030, but I don’t even know if that’s how employment contracts work. Politico said the dad was still running it? That sounds like spin not evidence.
I’m just confused why Politico even matters in a court case. If they wanted to fire him they could’ve, right? Also $220k a year… 2030… math says more than 1.75 but maybe it’s capped or something. Either way Liberty sounds like they’ll fight it forever and the school will keep acting like the victim.
