Treasury readies $250 bill with Trump’s portrait possible

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says the department has prepared for a potential congressional change that could let a special $250 bill featuring President Donald Trump be created for the nation’s 250th anniversary—while stressing the administration will “st
On Thursday. in the Brady Briefing Room at the White House. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent held up a draft and let the stakes hang in the air. The subject was simple to name but complicated to authorize: a special $250 bill that would carry President Donald Trump’s portrait as the country prepares to mark its 250th anniversary.
Bessent didn’t say Congress had already moved. He said his department had prepared anyway—because once the politics start, paperwork can lag behind. “It’s all in the hands of… Capitol Hill,” he told White House reporters. “We prepared things in advance… but we will stick to the law.”
Under current federal law, living presidents cannot appear on U.S. currency. That rule is why the idea remains contingent, not settled. Bessent added that he didn’t think it was “untoward” for the president in office during the 250th anniversary to appear on the bill.
A similar push has already surfaced once. Last year, GOP Rep. Joe Wilson of South Carolina proposed legislation that would require the Treasury to print $250 notes with Trump’s portrait, but the bill has not been taken up.
The current momentum comes with a specific paper trail. The Washington Post reported that two Trump political appointees began urging drafts of the new $250 note be created, including mocking up the president’s likeness. During Thursday’s briefing, Bessent held up the draft of the Post’s story.
If Congress does change the law, Trump would be the first living person to appear on American currency since 1866.
The possibility lands in a broader pattern of Trump’s imprint showing up across government-facing symbols—especially as the 250th anniversary approaches. Earlier this year. the Treasury Department announced that Trump’s signature would appear on all new printed money. replacing the previous practice of having signatures from the treasury secretary and the treasurer.
Outside currency. the administration has also tied the president’s image and name to institutions and commemorations: Trump’s face has been displayed on a banner over the Justice Department; his name was added onto the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the U.S. Institute of Peace; and policy initiatives—including “the Trump Accounts”—were named for him. The 250th birthday theme has extended further too. with the possibility of a new commemorative passport featuring Trump’s face. a commemorative coin. and a National Parks pass.
In Washington, the question now isn’t just whether Congress will act. It’s what’s already been readied on a shelf—templates, mocks, drafts—waiting for a law to change, and a president’s likeness to move from the background of commemoration to the center of legal tender.
U.S. Treasury Scott Bessent $250 bill Donald Trump currency law 250th anniversary Capitol Hill Rep. Joe Wilson commemorative money
so we’re just printing money with Trump now??
I don’t get it, how can they “prepare” a bill with his face if presidents can’t be on currency. Seems like they already know Congress will flip it.
Wait, isn’t the whole point that living presidents can’t be on bills? Sounds like they’re just trying to get around the rule by calling it “contingent.” Also 250th anniversary… wouldn’t that be more like Washington or something? idk.
This is crazy because people already complain about prices and then they’re talking about a $250 note with his portrait like that helps anyone. Then they said last year Joe Wilson proposed it but “not taken up”… so now they’re back again. Feels like a stunt, but also maybe it’ll happen because they did drafts already.
