When “Toy Story 5” began rolling out to 4,425 locations, it didn’t just land—it immediately dominated. Disney/Pixar’s return of Woody, Buzz and Jessie lifted opening-day earnings to just under $71 million, putting the film on pace for a $164 million domestic opening weekend.

The start is already drawing comparisons inside Pixar’s own recent history. It sits among the studio’s many industry-best animated opening weekends over the last decade—positioned between “Inside Out 2”‘s $154 million summer opening in 2024 and “The Incredibles 2”‘s $182.4 million in 2018.

Part of the momentum is coming from fans who’ve been waiting for the next chapter of the series, and part of it is coming from unexpected timing at the box office. The film’s early swing also credits additional matinee support from Juneteenth moviegoers.

The numbers have been reinforced by reception across the board. “Toy Story 5” posted an A on CinemaScore, with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 93% for both audiences and critics. With Illumination’s “Minions & Monsters” arriving in two weeks. the franchise still has the room it needs to aim beyond its latest high-water mark—crossing “Toy Story 4”’s $1.07 billion domestic total remains the big benchmark.

That momentum leaves the rest of the weekend chasing. In a distant second. Universal/Amblin’s “Disclosure Day” is headed for a sharp downturn. projected to fall 61% from its $44.5 million launch to $17.2 million this weekend. Steven Spielberg’s $115 million-budgeted sci-fi film now has an estimated domestic total of $78.4 million through Sunday.

On the same weekend. Focus Features’ “Obsession” finally posted a weekend total below its $17.1 million opening in its sixth frame. landing at $14.2 million. It now stands at $215 million domestic. joining “Sinners” as only the second original film since the start of 2018 to cross the $200 million mark.

Further down the charts, several specialty releases rolled out their own openings. A24’s “The Death of Robin Hood” brought in a $1.1 million opening day from 1. 762 locations. and is on pace for a $2.5 million opening. Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer star in a grim reimagining of the famed English outlaw’s final days. with mixed-to-positive reception—Rotten Tomatoes scores of 69% for critics and 71% for audiences—and a C+ on CinemaScore.

Neon’s horror film “Leviticus” is also getting a theatrical run, with an industry estimated $3 million opening from 1,076 locations. It’s drawing strong critical and weaker-but-solid audience response, earning Rotten Tomatoes scores of 93% critics and 78% audience.

Rounding out the specialty slate, Focus Features released “Girls Like Girls,” the LGBT romantic drama based on Hayley Kiyoko’s viral music video, set to earn a $2 million opening from just 504 locations.

The weekend’s hierarchy makes the pressure points clear: “Toy Story 5” is still accelerating into a peak-window run. while everything behind it is measuring survival against steep drops and modest openings. For now. audiences are choosing Woody. Buzz and Jessie in a way that’s hard to ignore—especially with the film’s ratings and pace aligning at exactly the moment new competition is close enough to be felt.
