Toy Story 5 Proves Kids Movies Still Win Big

“Toy Story 5” opened to $160 million domestic and $312 million worldwide, the highest 2026 opening to date and Pixar’s second-largest animated domestic opening weekend. With family titles stacking for the rest of 2026, the weekend results underline a simple re

A brand-new “Toy Story” weekend has landed with a kind of force that doesn’t leave much room for debate. In its first weekend, the fifth entry in Pixar’s flagship franchise made $160 million domestically and $312 million worldwide—already the highest opening of 2026 to date.

Domestically. it also ranks as the second-biggest animated opening weekend ever behind only Pixar’s own “Incredibles 2. ” which launched with $182.7 million in 2018. “Toy Story 5” sits at the 24th best domestic opening weekend ever. and the placement is almost symbolic: it’s been nestled between two “Dark Knight” films.

The numbers become even harder to ignore when you put them next to last year’s best benchmark for family appeal. “Toy Story 5” came in slightly behind “A Minecraft Movie,” which opened last year to $162.7 million in its opening weekend. “Minecraft” finished below $1 billion globally, but the close opening suggests there’s room for “Toy Story 5” to climb. Right now. it looks positioned to become just the second $1 billion movie of 2026 after “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. ” with the assumption that “Michael” falls just short while currently sitting at $959 billion.

The franchise’s upward momentum is also part of the story. “Toy Story 4” managed to sneak past $1 billion. powered by especially strong international grosses. and so far each “Toy Story” movie has done better at the box office than the last. Internationally. “Inside Out 2” is the only Pixar film that opened higher. and it went on to make more than $1 billion internationally on its own.

Taken together, the weekend performance paints a clear picture: Hollywood’s family pipeline doesn’t just matter—it can still shape the year at the box office.

As summer builds. the pressure shifts from whether audiences show up to how much room there is for everyone else to take share. The next big competitor hits July 1 with “Minions & Monsters. ” and those films can do close to a billion “in their sleep.” Disney’s live-action “Moana” arrives July 10. tracking for an opening between $80–90 million. August brings “PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie” and “Coyote vs. Acme. ” with additional titles still on the horizon. including “Shaun the Sheep. ” “Forgotten Island. ” “Wildwood. ” “The Cat in the Hat. ” “The Angry Birds Movie. ” and “Hexed.”.

Even outside the classic animation lanes, the year’s younger pull is showing up in surprising places. Pixar’s “Hoppers” and Sony Pictures Animation’s “GOAT” have both done better than expected this year and have helped bring out a younger crowd.

That matters because family films aren’t just standalone successes—they’re part of the broader box office recovery. The last year when there weren’t at least a few family movies in the annual Top 10 was 2022. when families still weren’t quite willing to risk it after COVID. Now, the numbers are starting to tick up again.

Box office totals back that up. Per Rentrak, this year’s estimated box office to date is at $4.4 billion—14.2 percent above where it was at this same point last year. It also lines up with a familiar milestone: it’s starting to resemble 2011, when the year-to-date domestic total sat at $4.5 billion.

For the summer specifically. the boost from “Toy Story 5” has 2026 just $35 million. or less than 2 percent. behind where the summer was at this point in 2019. That’s also the year when the last “Toy Story” movie opened on June 21. In 2019. “Avengers: Endgame” opened just before May. followed later by “The Lion King” live-action remake—so the question now is whether the rest of 2026 can deliver more surprises on that same level.
