ST. HELENS, Ore. — A tornado warning was issued for the St. Helens area in Columbia County on Thursday.
The National Weather Service alert, in effect through 12:45 p.m. Thursday, indicated a potential for a tornado and pea-sized hail in the area near Deer Island and St. Helens.
The wind and hail could cause damage to property and vehicles. People are asked to take shelter.
The band of weather is also sweeping Highway 30 in the area, potentially causing problems for drivers.
The storm is moving to the east across the Columbia River to the Kalama, Washington area.
NWS – Portland issued a “Special Weather Statement” through 1 p.m. for Kalama for a potential landspout or hail in Cowlitz County, Washington.
Thunderstorms are in the forecast through the day across the Western Oregon region, with a chance of strong wind and hail as well.

According to records, this is the first time a Tornado Warning has been issued for Columbia County. According to the National Centers for Environmental Information, there have been five tornadoes reported since 1965. The last confirmed tornado touched down in 2020. “A tornado touched down around 12:20 PM in Northwest St. Helens, OR near the intersection of Pittsburgh and Robnette Road,” NWS Portland said. “The tornado moved southeastward, ending near just east of McBride Elementary School. The most damage was done near Barr Ave and Pittsburgh Road, with damage to trees, a camper, fences and snapped power lines.” The tornado was rated an EF-0.
