Tony Jefferson has been around long enough to know how quickly NFL dreams can fade.
At 34, the veteran safety has played in 134 career games, and the wear-and-tear of that experience shows up in his focus. Earlier this week, he made his target unmistakable: “I want to win a ring.”
He didn’t just say he wants the Chargers to contend. He tied the season’s stakes to a specific date and place—because Super Bowl LXI will be held on February 14 at SoFi Stadium, in Los Angeles.
“The Super Bowl is in LA, at our home stadium, so I’m trying to do whatever I can as far as being a leader and my playmaking ability to put my best foot forward on the field,” Jefferson said.
Then he added the line that has been spreading through football chatter ever since: “That would be pretty special.”
For Jefferson, the pitch isn’t vague hope. It’s the kind of opportunity players rarely get. “How often do you get an opportunity to do that? It’s here, in our home stadium where we play our home games,” he said. “That would be pretty special.”
But the 2026 calendar doesn’t bend around wishful thinking. The Chargers still have work to do before February arrives.
This week, the team will complete Phase 2 of the voluntary offseason program. After that, they’ll shift to Phase 3 next week, which includes Organized Team Activity (OTA) practices that are expected to start feeling more like real football.
Jefferson sounded like someone paying attention not just to what happens on Sundays, but to how teams build momentum when the pads are still away.
He said the energy around the Chargers in recent weeks has been strong. “We’re able to get some plays in, run around, be around the young guys, the vets … it’s just great being back,” Jefferson said. “Another year around the sun for me so enjoying every moment.”
