Speaking to Pat McAfee, Cruise said that he would be “driving” the cars in the upcoming sequel. He explained, “Here’s the thing: If I’m making a movie about airplanes, I’m flying them.”
This should come as no surprise to fans of Cruise. He has famously done his own stunts in the Mission: Impossible franchise, and the same can be said about Top Gun: Maverick. That will not change when the Days of Thunder sequel races into theaters.

Cruise will return to star in the upcoming Days of Thunder sequel alongside Anne Hathaway, who will play the owner and engineer of a racecar team.
The sequel was announced in August 2026. It is currently in pre-production, and fans can expect filming to commence soon. The Days of Thunder sequel will be released on June 2, 2028.
Of course, it is a sequel to the 1990 sports movie, Days of Thunder. Cruise starred in the first movie alongside Nicole Kidman, Robert Duvall, and Randy Quaid.
This is not the first time that Cruise has returned to a franchise decades later. In 2022, he starred in Top Gun: Maverick, which came out 36 years after the original movie. Similarly, it featured a new love interest, as Kelly McGillis was replaced by Jennifer Connelly in the legacy sequel.
Top Gun: Maverick was an even bigger hit than its predecessor. It made nearly $1.5 billion worldwide at the box office. The sequel also helped launch the career of Glen Powell, who has since starred in movies like Twisters and The Running Man.
