Todd Bowles backs Mayfield as contract stalls
Todd Bowles insists Baker Mayfield’s off-field contract uncertainty has not affected what happens on the field, even as negotiations on an extension remain at a standstill ahead of the final year of his deal.
Todd Bowles didn’t try to soften the moment, but he did draw a clear line between business and football.
On Thursday. the Buccaneers head coach said there are issues the team and Baker Mayfield still need to work out on the business side. while insisting that nothing has changed on the field. Mayfield is entering the final year of his contract with Tampa Bay, and talks about an extension have stalled. That tension has also spilled into Mayfield’s position on timing: he said he won’t continue talks if a new deal isn’t in place at the start of training camp.
Bowles’ message was direct. He said there is “absolutely no question” he wants Mayfield as the Buccaneers’ long-term quarterback. Then he moved quickly to what matters to the team right now: performance and preparation.
“Baker’s a true pro,” Bowles said. “I don’t think there’s any disappointment whatsoever. I mean, he loves it here. We love him here. The contract stuff takes care of itself. whether it’s the quarterback or any other position that comes up — those things get worked out over time. You just concentrate on what we got to concentrate on, on the field, and he’s been great right there.”.
The coach also acknowledged there’s no guarantee Mayfield will get the contract he wants with the Buccaneers. But Bowles’ stance makes one point unmistakable: making a compelling case for his value through his play won’t hurt his chances.
The football answers appear to be there already, even as the contract question hangs over the offseason. For Tampa Bay, the pressure point is timing — training camp is close — but Bowles is asking everyone to keep their focus on what Mayfield has been doing well on the field.
Todd Bowles Baker Mayfield Tampa Bay Buccaneers NFL contract extension training camp quarterback
So basically he’s saying “don’t worry” while everything is literally a worry lol.
I don’t get why they’re stalling. Like if he’s good, just sign him? Training camp is right there. Seems like they’re making it harder on purpose.
Does he not know the contract situation affects the team chemistry though? Even if it’s “on the field,” guys talk. I feel like Mayfield’s gonna sit out or something if they don’t cave before camp.
Bowles saying “absolutely no question” is classic coach talk. They always say that right before they lowball you. Also didn’t Mayfield already want like a huge number? Idk, I just think the “business side” excuse is kinda fake. If he’s a pro then why are they acting like he’s not waiting on a deal?
