In Those Who Wish Me Dead. Hannah Faber (Angelina Jolie) is a smokejumper. haunted by a tragic past. when she crosses paths with Connor Casserly (Finn Little). Connor is a young boy being hunted by assassins after he witnesses something he “absolutely should not have seen.” And as Connor tries to survive in the Montana wilderness. Hannah becomes his best chance of making it out alive.
The film also leans hard into pursuit from multiple directions. Ethan Sawyer (Jon Bernthal), a sheriff’s deputy trying to help Connor, is pulled into the same dangerous orbit. The assassins driving the chase are Jack Blackwell (Aidan Gillen) and Patrick Blackwell (Nicholas Hoult), Jack’s brother. Ethan’s wife. Allison Sawyer. is played by Medina Senghore. while Tyler Perry appears as Arthur Phillip and Jake Weber plays Owen Casserly. Connor’s father.
Even with that lineup and Taylor Sheridan’s reputation for tightly wound thrillers built around survival and trying to “do the right thing,” Those Who Wish Me Dead didn’t land as a breakout at the box office.
The film grossed only about $23.5 million worldwide, with roughly $7.4 million coming from the U.S. and Canada. Box Office Mojo lists a slightly lower worldwide total of about $19.1 million. Either way, the final tally wasn’t strong.
But the release timing mattered. The film opened in May 2021, during a highly controversial Warner Bros. same-day strategy in which movies were released both in theaters and on HBO Max—an approach that cost the studio Christopher Nolan. With audiences able to watch immediately at home. the theatrical run didn’t have the same kind of runway it might have otherwise.
Streaming data helped explain why the drop looked so steep on paper but less catastrophic in reality. Those Who Wish Me Dead was watched by 1.2 million U.S. households over its first three days on HBO Max, and it reached more than 3 million by the end of its first month.
That streaming momentum didn’t erase the numbers, but it did soften the blow.
