A Connecticut ice cream shop has made a piece of “apizza” out of ice cream.

This month, Kelly’s Cone Connection in Hamden is serving the New Haven-style slice made out of a waffle cone base, strawberry basil ice cream, strawberry sundae sauce topped with grated white chocolate “parm” and white chocolate basil leaves.

“There’s also a little bit of cocoa on the crust so that your fingers get that classic New Haven char,” the ice cream shop said in an Instagram post.

Pronounced “ah-beets,” apizza is a a sauce-forward pie with a charred, chewy crust and grated Pecorino Romano.

The apizza ice cream is the fourth collaboration Kelly’s has done with The Side Dishers this year, a couple that posts food reviews and activity recommendations on social media with nearly 10,000 Instagram followers.

Over the last three months, Kelly’s and The Side Dishers have created a cheeseburger, clam chowder, and—the most popular—a lobster roll, all out of ice cream and sold for $9.

Emily Guerrucci of The Side Dishers, who has made social media posts for Kelly’s for a year, came up with the idea for the ice creams to “pique [the] interest” of younger people since the shop typically attracts an older clientele, she said.

Kelly’s has seen “a big increase” in younger clients coming in, said owner Kelly Ciccone.

Guerrucci and Ciccone chose to create an apizza slice because “we hadn’t seen” others do it before, Guerrucci said. They debuted the slice this month because there is an apizza festival in New Haven on Sept. 12, she said.
