2026 has been quite the year to be a New Yorker, and Sony Pictures Classics is likely hoping that the Knicks-fueled good vibes continue through the October release of “The Only Living Pickpocket in New York.” Noah Segan’s feature directorial debut is an unapologetic love letter to the city, starring John Turturro as an aging thief whose old-school tactics become less effective in an age of two-factor authentication. The subtle crime drama is filled with locations and characters that evoke the city’s rich history, documenting the passage of time while exploring what made its past eras so great.
“Today, you see a New York movie, it’s New York with a couple of B-camera shots of the city,” executive producer Rian Johnson said during an interview with IndieWire at Sundance, where the film premiered this January. “You watch this movie, it’s steeped in New York. It is just drenched in the city.”
In addition to Turturro, “The Only Living Pickpocket in New York” stars Giancarlo Esposito, Will Price, Tatiana Maslany, Victoria Moroles, Steve Buscemi, and Jamie Lee Curtis.
An official synopsis for the film reads: Harry Lehman is an aging pickpocket who plies his trade with ever-diminishing returns in a drastically changed New York. Wallets stuffed with cash have been replaced by easily canceled credit cards, and Harry struggles to make ends meet as he cares for his disabled wife, Rosie. When he unwittingly purloins and fences a valuable USB stick, Harry finds himself in a race against time to return the loot or face the rage of a vengeful crime family.
“The Only Living Pickpocket in New York” was acquired by Sony Pictures Classics following its Sundance debut, where critics praised its gritty authenticity and ability to tell a crime story without relying on violence.
“Petty theft in Harry’s world follows strict rules: analogue only,” Beandrea July wrote in her IndieWire review. “No credit cards. No fraud. Just cash and pawnable items destined for resale. When Harry brings his take to Ben, a pawnshop dealer played with steady warmth by Steve Buscemi, he explains that his Wall Street mark carried ‘all platinum cards’ but no cash. The problem is immediately clear: Harry’s expertise hasn’t vanished, but its value has shrunk in a consumer economy dominated by Apple Pay and swipe-lock security.”
“The Only Living Pickpocket in New York” opens in New York and Los Angeles theaters on Friday, October 23 before expanding nationwide on October 30. Watch the trailer below.
