The future of communication has nothing to do with phones. This is what’s coming next

The mobile industry has spent the better part of four decades with one objective: putting a connected device in every human hand. That mission is nearly complete. Mobile services now reach about 5.8 billion consumers, roughly 70% of the people alive. In wealthy markets, almost anyone who wants to be reachable already is, according to the GSMA’s Mobile Economy 2026 report. The smartphone finished the job. Once almost everyone owned one, reaching another person stopped being the problem the industry existed to solve. So, if connecting people is nearly done, what comes next?

The clearest read on the answer comes from Mobile World Congress, the industry’s flagship trade show, run by the GSMA, the trade body for mobile operators. The main event fills Barcelona each spring. Its smaller edition in China, MWC Shanghai, ran in late June, and the exhibition halls were given over to autonomous vehicles, drone fleets, satellite constellations, and robots built for warehouses and chemical plants.

This mobile show wasn’t about phones at all. Having connected nearly everyone, the industry’s next decade runs through machines communicating with each other.

What the phone became

For close to two decades, progress in mobile meant a better device. The camera improved, the screen sharpened, the chip got quicker, and each cycle sold itself. More recently, those gains have flattened into the incremental. A flagship phone in 2026 refines the one from 2022 rather than reinventing it.

So the industry pointed its ambition elsewhere, toward everything the network could carry once the human endpoints were saturated. A humanoid robot, an autonomous car, a drone, and a satellite terminal are all, at the end of the day, communication devices. They spend their working lives exchanging data with each other, with edge servers, and with the cloud, and they fail the moment that exchange slows down. A drone swarm holding formation needs each unit’s position and heading to reach its neighbors faster than a collision can occur, which is a task for 5G Advanced rather than 4G or Wi-Fi.

China Telecom, one of the country’s three state-owned network operators, has paired with the robot maker AgiBot, the Shanghai firm that built its ten-thousandth humanoid in March, to rent machines to aviation and logistics companies under a service model in which the intelligence is delivered over the carrier’s network. A rival operator, China Unicom, has put robots into chemical plants for hazard inspection.

Those deployments show up first in China because it is the one market with the ground to support them. The country holds more than 40% of the world’s 5G connections, has commercialized 5G Advanced across more than 330 cities, and is forecast to pass 1.7 billion 5G connections by 2030, according to the GSMA’s Mobile Economy China report, released the week of the show. The same report projects mobile services will add $2.1 trillion to the Chinese economy by 2030. A network that dense is what lets a company treat connectivity as something it can build a robot business on top of.

The same change is underway in the United States, carried more by satellites and self-driving cars than by humanoids. SpaceX’s Starlink already reaches ordinary phones in dead zones through its partnership with T-Mobile. In April 2026, Amazon agreed to buy Globalstar, the network behind Apple’s satellite features, and fold it into the Leo constellation it used to call Project Kuiper. Waymo runs around 500,000 paid robotaxi rides per week across 10 U.S. cities, each car a connected machine making decisions in traffic in real time. While the hardware differs from China’s, the shift underneath it—communication moving from people to machines—is the same.

The opportunity underneath

The companies best placed to profit from this are the ones that already own the layer everything runs on. Carriers’ consumer business stopped growing once nearly everyone had a phone and a data plan, and machines are the demand that replaces it. A robot that a factory operator rents by the month, drawing its instructions from the network rather than thinking entirely for itself, is a paying customer the operators never had before. The number of machines that need connecting keeps climbing, while the number of new phone buyers does not. Whichever robot maker wins, the network underneath gets paid.

That’s where the openings are for everyone else, too. The machines themselves are getting cheaper and more alike, so the value moves to what you can build once fast, reliable connectivity is everywhere: a delivery service with no drivers, an inspection crew that never enters the building, a fleet that coordinates itself across a city. Those are businesses that couldn’t have existed with the network of a generation ago, and most of them have nothing to do with making a better handset.

Almost none of this reaches an ordinary person’s day yet. The humanoid robots are heading for factories and inspection sites, not living rooms, and the business models behind them are being worked out in real time rather than proven at scale. A crowded exhibition hall shows intent more than demand.

For a century, communication meant one person reaching another, and the phone became the perfected instrument for that. The work that remains is in machines reaching each other and the systems above them, and that’s the traffic the industry is building for now. The phone met the needs of the human side of communication so thoroughly that the future of the network has moved on to the machines.
