The Batman Part II Starts Filming as Reeves Teases Set

Matt Reeves confirmed that The Batman Part II has begun production on Friday, June 12, posting a first set photo from the slate and a gurney scene. The start comes nearly a year after Reeves said the script was finished—against the backdrop of DCU co-CEO James
Matt Reeves didn’t just confirm The Batman Part II is moving forward—he showed it.
On Friday, June 12, the writer and director shared a photo from the set, signaling that production is officially underway. The post came with Reeves’s caption: “#FirstShot #TheBatmanPart2 CC: @emesserschmidt Here We Go…”, tagging the sequel’s director of photography, Erik Messerschmidt.
In the image, a slate is in focus while a man lies on a gurney in the background. A sheet covers the person’s bottom half, though it’s unclear who the individual is.
The timing lands with extra weight. The new filming update arrives nearly a year after Reeves revealed that the script was finally finished. It also follows more than four years since the first movie hit theaters.
That “not yet fully ready” period has been the subject of public back-and-forth. In late 2024. DCU co-CEO James Gunn responded to a fan question about a claim that the sequel’s release date had been pushed back to 2027. Gunn wrote on Threads: “Sure. Yes, it is true. The only reason for the delay is there isn’t a full script (those of you who follow me here probably know that already). ” adding. “Matt is committed to making the best film he possibly can. and no one can accurately guess exactly how long a script will take to write. Once there is a finished script, there is around two years for pre-production, shooting and post-production on big films.”.
Earlier this year, star Robert Pattinson also teased the script for the upcoming movie.
The set photo doesn’t answer every question—especially about that gurney scene—but it does shift the project into a new phase. For months, the delay explanation has centered on the absence of a full script. Now. with Reeves posting the “first shot” from production. the timeline that Gunn described is turning into something concrete: pre-production and shooting no longer sound theoretical.

Gurney scene already? Batman 2 is just gonna be another hospital vibe lol.
So the script wasn’t ready and that’s why 2027? Seems like they always say it’s “not fully ready” and then it drags forever. I’m just confused how they can start filming before anyone even knows what’s going on.
I don’t buy it, James Gunn said delay is because no full script but now they’re filming like it’s done. That gurney pic looks like a fake prop too, like they just staged it for the promo. Also “first shot” could mean anything, they probably had sets built already.
Not to be dramatic but this is exactly why I don’t trust movie release dates. They were saying the script was the issue, then suddenly “here we go…” Meanwhile we’re all sitting here waiting like it’s going to land in 2027 for sure? And the Batman gurney thing… is that supposed to be Joker related or something? I’m probably way off but the article made it sound important.
