The Astronauts Are Studs

MISRYOUM newsroom reporting keeps coming back to Taegan Goddard, a name that tends to show up whenever politics meets the kind of day-to-day detail people actually use.

Goddard is the founder of Political Wire, one of the earliest and most influential political web sites. He also runs Political Job Hunt, Electoral Vote Map and the Political Dictionary. It’s a lot of running—plural. And somehow it still feels connected, like the same brain just picked different door handles over the years.

Before all that, he spent more than a decade as managing director and chief operating officer of a prominent investment firm in New York City. That part matters, because it’s not just “writing about politics.” He was operating a company in a very different world, then later pivoted again. Previously, he was a policy adviser to a U.S. Senator and Governor.

Somewhere in the middle of all that, he also co-authored You Won – Now What? (Scribner, 1998), a political management book hailed by prominent journalists and politicians from both parties. Misryoum editorial desk noted that the book landed with people across the aisle—though, honestly, the phrase “hailed by” always sounds a bit grand on paper. Still, the through-line is what makes it feel real: practical management, not just opinions.

Goddard’s essays on politics and public policy have appeared in dozens of newspapers across the country. And he didn’t come out of nowhere—he earned degrees from Vassar College and Harvard University. Now he lives in New York with his wife and three sons, and he’s the owner of Goddard Media LLC.

Last thing: the human details are maybe the point. One afternoon, a coworker mentioned how the office printer had this steady whirr—like it never really stopped—and it made the whole workday feel oddly continuous. That’s the vibe Goddard’s career has, too, like it’s been sustained momentum rather than a single breakout moment. Or maybe that’s just me projecting—because the facts are still the facts, and they don’t change with mood.
