Tesla torched in Geneva as G7 protest turns violent

Tesla torched – A Tesla was set on fire in downtown Geneva during thousands of anti-G7 protesters’ march, as smaller groups broke off from an initially peaceful rally and clashed with police. Thick black smoke, smashed windows, and tear gas marked the late-afternoon unrest ah
Smoke rose above downtown Geneva on Sunday as thousands of demonstrators gathered ahead of the G7 summit—then the street scenes that began with chanting and banners gave way to chaos.
Late in the afternoon. a Tesla parked near a central bus stop was set ablaze. forcing firefighters to move in to extinguish the fire. Thick black smoke climbed over the city as protesters hurled bricks and debris at riot police. Windows at buildings connected to international organizations. including the United Nations. and at businesses were smashed. with families and bystanders pushed to leave the area as tear gas drifted across central Geneva.
Authorities said around 20,000 people took part in the demonstration. The march initially unfolded largely peacefully as organizers led crowds through Geneva’s streets with visible police presence. The shift came later as smaller groups splintered off and began vandalism and confrontations with officers—tearing stones from the ground and throwing them at police. and ripping down wooden barriers. A handful of demonstrators also smashed windows at a Banque du Leman and other buildings.
Officials have not yet released a full accounting of arrests or injuries tied to the unrest.
The march was organized as part of a broader mobilization ahead of the summit. which will take place from June 15 to 17 in Evian-les-Bains. France. on the shores of Lake Geneva. Demonstrators framed the gathering as opposition to what they described as a concentration of economic and political power among wealthy nations. Organizers had even printed a handbook for demonstrators that included a map of the security perimeter. tips on how to gear up for the march. and advice on how to behave if detained by police.
For many participants, the anger ran deeper than the day’s violence. Protester Pippa Saugy said. “To me. it’s a meeting of the rich that shows once again how the rich can become even richer while the poor are left behind.” Others pointed to frustration with inequality. globalization. and the influence of wealthy elites over global decision-making.
The rally also arrived with a fresh flashpoint in public debate: days earlier. Tesla CEO Elon Musk—who has also worked as an adviser to President Donald Trump—became the world’s first trillionaire after SpaceX’s long-awaited stock market debut at $150 per share. The milestone has intensified discussion about wealth concentration and corporate power. and on Sunday the burning of a Tesla drew attention to the link protesters wanted to make between anger at the global economic system and one of its most visible symbols.
Even among those who weren’t focused on the Tesla, the protest drew a wide coalition. Other demonstrators cited concerns including climate change, gender inequality, and the broader direction of global economic policy.
The tensions on the streets were matched by security preparations across the region as authorities anticipated further demonstrations tied to the summit. Across the border in France. the country announced the deployment of more than 13. 000 police and gendarmerie officers to secure the summit area. More than 800 French border control officers were set to be active, up from about 60 normally.
Leaders expected to attend include those from the United States. United Kingdom. France. Germany. Italy. Canada. and Japan. alongside representatives from the European Union (EU). The agenda is set to address ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine. as well as broader economic and political challenges facing the global order.
Large protests have long shadowed G7 meetings. often bringing activists opposed to globalization. economic inequality. and the influence of major powers on global governance. Officials in Geneva said Sunday’s turnout largely reflected that tradition of demonstration. noting that most participants did not engage in violence—while the clashes and damage came from smaller groups.
As the summit moves closer, the question for officials is whether the pattern that played out Sunday—peace for much of the march, then sudden escalation—will repeat itself under even tighter security.
The G7 summit is expected to proceed as planned, with world leaders arriving under tight security.
Geneva protest G7 summit Tesla fire Elon Musk riot police tear gas Evian-les-Bains United Nations Geneva
So they torch a Tesla and call it a protest… ok.
Wait tear gas in Geneva? That’s like insane. I saw people online saying it was peaceful at first but then suddenly everything went crazy. Also the UN windows getting smashed is a bad look.
Not gonna lie I thought Geneva was in the US for some reason lol. But if they’re mad at wealthy nations why pick a Tesla specifically? Like Tesla is owned by rich people too so I guess it makes sense? Except they didn’t even say if it was connected to the G7 stuff.
This is what happens when people get whipped up by those protest handbooks and ‘mapped’ routes. Everybody’s like ‘economic power’ and then it turns into throwing bricks at cops and smashing windows at banks. I’m sure there were plenty of peaceful folks, but the chaos part is what everyone’s gonna remember. Also thick black smoke over downtown… that can’t be good for anyone’s lungs, like families and bystanders just stuck there.
