Second in a series of 10 profiles of 2026 Surrey Sports Hall of Fame inductees, celebrated as the hall’s inaugural class during a June 2 ceremony at Surrey City Hall. Terry Bailey, Athlete Terry Bailey has lived in Surrey his entire life, growing up in Cloverdale where his football journey began. By 18, his talent as a running back helped Surrey Rams win the 1969 BC Juvenile Championship. In 1970, he joined Simon Fraser University, quickly showing his ability by setting a single-game rushing record
of 227 yards. As a senior, he set a school season record with 866 rushing yards. Over his SFU career, he totalled 3,151 rushing yards, 478 receiving yards, and 43 touchdowns, earning selection by the BC Lions as a territorial protection player. Terry played nine seasons with the BC Lions (1974–1982), becoming one of the team’s most versatile players, competing in every offensive backfield and receiver position. His best season came in 1977, when he led the team with 50 receptions. He played 144 regular-season
games before retiring and was inducted into the BC Football Hall of Fame in 2013. After retiring, Terry returned to SFU as offensive co-ordinator for over 20 years and volunteered as a coach in the community. I didn’t even know Surrey had a Sports Hall of Fame until this popped up. 50 receptions in 1977 is wild though, like how is that even real?
Wait, so he was inducted into the BC Football Hall of Fame in 2013 but they’re honoring him again for Surrey in 2026? That seems like double-dipping awards or am I reading it backwards. Also “territorial protection player” sounds like some kind of security job, not football lol.
Good for him, but I’m confused why they say 2026 inductees and then it’s “inaugural class” June 2… like was it actually this year or next year? Either way, living in Surrey his whole life and then helping as OC for 20 years is super impressive. Surrey Rams 1969 champions too, I swear that’s around when my uncle said he played in something like that. Different era I guess but still cool.
