Enniscorthy The inter-club competitions are now in full swing with a full schedule of matches played over the last few weeks. Our Barton Cup team put up a great performance in Bunclody. With the teams tied at two matches each and one

game on the course, the home team prevailed, winning the match on the third extra hole. Best of luck to Bunclody in the next round. Last weekend saw the winning order restored. On Saturday our Pierce Purcell team took on Athy, a club with whom we have a reciprocal green free arrangement. The matches were very evenly balanced in Athy with both going to the wire. Athy did the business by winning one on the 17th and the other on the 18th. The matches in

Enniscorthy weren’t as close with one match finishing on the 13th and the other on the 16th. We were therefore in a play-off sudden death situation and we all know the vagaries of same. The Athy player hit a nice shot to the back flag on the first, only to see it just slip on to the apron. Our man Shane (as they say, cometh the hour cometh the man) hit an exceptional shot to three feet to send Enniscorthy through to round three. Well

done to Eamon, Peter and the entire panel. Let’s keep the flag flying. Also on Saturday, our Junior Cup team took on a strong Waterford side with Enniscorthy having three games at home. This too was a nail-biting affair as we lost one match at home and one in Waterford. The books were balanced shortly after with two games secured at home. Hearts were beating fast as our last man standing was one up playing the treacherous 18th in Waterford. Maurice, who was in the

same position in the previous round against Rosslare, came up trumps again by winning the 18th to give him a two up victory and secure another day out for our team. Sunday saw our Barton Shield team take on Gowran, with both matches in Enniscorthy. This was always going to be a tricky affair, and so it proved. While we won by three holes we will look back and be thankful that we got over the line. Commiserations to our Women’s Junior Cup team who

lost out to a strong Waterford side 4-1. Saturday and Sunday, May 9 and 10, open singles: 1, Margaret Frayne (10), 38 points (back nine); 1st gent, Seán Buckley (17), 36 points; 1st lady, Bridget McDonald (18), 38 points; visitor, Liz Elkinson (Woodenbridge, 23), 30 points. New Ross Seniors Our J.B. Carr team had a resounding four and one victory over Courtown in the first leg of their

county final last week. Team: Mossie Ryan and John Hartley; Eamonn Dungan and Patsy Farrell; Seán Murphy and Tommy Liston; John Murphy and Leo Carroll; Davy Doran and Jim Byrne.
