Marvel had a big weekend at San Diego Comic-Con, unveiling a few new heroes and teasing the future of the franchise on the big screen. Not only was Ryan Gosling officially announced as the next Ghost Rider for a Shawn Levy-directed film coming in 2028, but Ryan Coogler also confirmed that David Jonsson (Alien: Romulus, The Long Walk) will star as the new Black Panther in a film coming to theaters on December 15, 2028. Marvel also brought out Anthony and Joe Russo, along with most of the Avengers: Doomsday cast, to promote the film before it opens in theaters on December 18 later this year. Attendees at Hall H this weekend were also shown an exclusive trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, different from the one released to the public just last week.
Collider’s Steve Weintraub had the chance to chat with MCU stars and creatives alike at San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend, including Tenoch Huerta, who played Namor in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Huerta’s Namor will appear in Avengers: Doomsday, and he was even shown in the first trailer for the film, but it’s unclear what his role will be. When asked what he could tease about Doom, and what makes him so powerful that Thor is gathering all these heroes from different corners of the Multiverse, Huerta told Collider:
“Well, he’s that powerful that the MCU has to have every hero in different worlds — Fantastic Four, X-Men, Avengers — together to defeat him. That is the power of Doctor Doom. And why he’s so evil is because he’s hurt. Something, a tragedy, happened in his life, and this is the way he found to heal in a weird way. But it’s part of the humanity in him. And of course, you have that actor, that badass actor, playing Doom. My God, he’s fantastic. For me as an actor, I’ve admired him for years. To be a part of this war with him, and all of them, is so cool.”
Weintraub also asked Huerta about his first interaction filming a scene with Downey’s Doom, and he dropped a bombshell, confirming that the two “don’t have direct interaction in this part of the story,” but he promised that “at the end, what he’s doing affects the entire world. With this anger, he can destroy everything around. So, it’s not direct, the relationship, but it’s something that is the consequence of what is happening in his heart. It’s poison for everybody else.” This officially confirms that Namor will not have any scenes sharing the screen with Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. Huerta went on to share praise for both MCU scripts and the Russos as directors, telling Collider:
“In dramatic terms, talking about the script, it’s so cool when you can see that because it’s human, it’s realistic, and that’s why the MCU is so powerful. That’s why the fans love everything in Marvel movies, because it’s sensitive and smart. You have these two directors [Anthony and Joe Russo], they are so cool. They are smart and intelligent and sensitive, and they are totally open. As an actor, when you suggest something, they are open, they listen to you, and then it’s there. That said, I don’t know, I’m so happy to be part of this.”

Tenoch Huerta Provides Clarity on ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ Filming Timeline

Avengers: Doomsday started production last year in late April, and although Avengers: Secret Wars is set to be released almost exactly one year after Doomsday, the film has not yet begun production. Weintraub also had the chance to speak with the Russo brothers, Joe and Anthony, and ask when they would begin shooting Secret Wars, and while they didn’t give a specific date, they confirmed that it’s “soon,” so soon that it’s “making them sweat.”
When asked when he’s set to return to London to begin filming scenes for Secret Wars, Huerta told Collider: “I don’t know, because they don’t have the script. As soon as they have the script… Well, as far as I know. But I hope soon. I hope soon. London is beautiful. It’s a beautiful city. Maybe my favorite city in the world.” While it’s easy to be alarmed at this stage that there’s no completed Secret Wars script yet, it’s not uncommon for Marvel to begin shooting movies and flesh out the script as production moves along. There’s no reason to be concerned about a potential Secret Wars delay, at least not yet.
