Tempo update injuries on Rice and Sykes ahead Sun

Tempo injury – Toronto Tempo revealed Kiki Rice has a Grade 3 ankle sprain and Brittney Sykes has a plantar fascia injury, with both expected to return in 2026 after reevaluations. Nyara Sabally remains questionable for Friday against the Connecticut Sun after missing three

The Toronto Tempo’s Friday injury update landed like a cold dose of timing—because it comes right before a key stretch, and because two of the team’s biggest names will be watching the next games from the sidelines.

Kiki Rice has been out since June 3 with an ankle injury, and the team now lists it as a Grade 3 ankle sprain. Brittney Sykes suffered a non-contact injury during the Tempo’s loss to the Fever on Tuesday, and Toronto said she has a plantar fascia injury.

Both players will be reevaluated in the coming weeks. The Tempo expects each to recover fully and return in 2026.

The loss that ended Rice’s momentum came in more brutal fashion than a box-score can show. Rice. 22. has been averaging 12.7 points. 4.7 rebounds. 2.6 assists and a steal over her first 10 WNBA games. and she started her last seven before being sidelined. She appeared to suffer the injury on a drive to the hoop with less than two minutes left in the fourth quarter of a 97-82 loss against the New York Liberty.

After a shot was blocked by Jonquel Jones, Rice landed awkwardly. She grabbed at her leg while on the court and stayed down in clear pain. She then hobbled off the court and went to the locker room.

Sykes’ setback has been just as impactful on the Tempo’s daily rhythm. even if it came in a different moment. Better known as “Slim. ” Sykes is averaging 20.1 points. 3.8 rebounds. and 3.5 assists through 15 games. and she ranks fifth in the league in scoring. In the third quarter, she fell while trying to cut to the basket. She did appear to put weight on both legs while being assisted off the court. but she is now dealing with the plantar fascia injury.

The Tempo’s immediate problem list doesn’t end with Rice and Sykes. Big Nyara Sabally is listed as questionable for the team’s game on Friday against the Connecticut Sun after missing the previous three games with a right hamstring injury.

If Sabally is unable to go, Toronto will have only nine players available for the contest—leaving the roster’s next steps to last-second decisions and short-term depth as the Tempo try to hold steady without three key pieces.
