Teenage Wimbledon star is defaulted after racquet flies

German 15-year-old Ida Wobker was defaulted in her Wimbledon girls’ singles first round after accidentally flinging her racquet into the stands during a second-set comeback attempt against Romania’s Maria Valentina Pop.
A Wimbledon junior match can turn on one swing of the arm—then, suddenly, the whole night changes.
German rising talent Ida Wobker, 15, was in a first-round clash against Romania’s Maria Valentina Pop when her comeback started to unravel. After dropping the opening set 6-0, Wobker fought back in the second set and found herself 5-5, up 30-love after hitting a backhand out of court long.
The frustration came fast. Wrestling with her efforts to get a foothold in Pop’s service game. Wobker struck the turf with her racquet and let go of the handle. The problem wasn’t just where the racquet ended up—it was the way it bounced. Instead of staying on Court 11. the force of the throw sent it skidding off the grass and into the stands. reaching spectators in the crowd.
The chair umpire paused the match and called for a supervisor to come onto the court. After several minutes inspecting the incident, the contest was called “game, set and match.” Wobker was defaulted from the girls’ draw in the middle of that second-set comeback.
There is no hard-and-fast rule that spells out exactly when a player is defaulted for throwing a racquet or ball in anger, and the key factor is often whether anyone’s safety was put at risk. In this case, no one in the crowd was harmed.
The Wimbledon default adds to a list of high-profile moments where balls or equipment accidentally hit officials or spectators. Novak Djokovic was defaulted at the 2020 US Open after a ball thrown behind him struck a line judge in the throat. despite his immediate apologies. Five years later. Lorenzo Musetti avoided a similar punishment during his French Open quarter-final against Frances Tiafoe after kicking a loose ball which hit the line judge on the chest; Tiafoe said continuing the match felt “comical. ” and Musetti later admitted he was “a little bit scared” because he hadn’t meant to harm the official.
Wobker accepted her punishment with minimal fuss, later reposting the opinion of former German professional Barbara Rittner, who mentors her. Rittner posted on Instagram story: “(Poo emoji) happens (female shrug emoji) you learn from it!”
When contacted for comment by The Athletic, Wimbledon’s Referees’ Office confirmed that the default was issued against Wobker because her loose racquet hit a spectator. The office also made clear that nobody in the crowd was harmed.
The moment itself—one missed backhand. one burst of frustration. and a racquet that didn’t land where it was meant to—has now become the story of Wobker’s first Wimbledon match. At this level. the margin between a slip and a safety risk is thin. and on Saturday it was decided in a few minutes under the rules.

Defaulted over a racquet toss?? That’s kinda wild.
So she just… threw it and it bounced into the stands and that’s it? I mean, if nobody got hurt then why punish so hard. Wimbledon is like super strict though.
Wait, was it actually the ball or the racquet that hit someone? The article says no one was harmed but then also compares it to Djokovic getting defaulted for a judge getting hit in the throat. Sounds like they should’ve just warned her, not booted her from the whole tournament.
I feel like teens always get treated like criminals for stuff like this. Tennis is stressful and one swing can mess your whole game up, same as that story about Djokovic at the US Open (why do these things always happen at slams?). If the racquet skidded off the grass, it’s not like she meant to beam anybody, right? Default just seems harsh for a junior match.
