The night the San Antonio Spurs celebrated their Western Conference Finals win in Game 6, a 17-year-old ended up fighting for his life after a fall from a vehicle during the chaos of “honking” celebrations.
The teenager has now been declared legally “brain dead” following a severe head injury, after suffering the fall during celebrations on the south side of the city last Thursday.
Police say the teen was riding on top of a vehicle participating in the traditional honking drive, an area that often draws crowds to Southwest Military Drive. It was there, according to police reports, that he fell from the vehicle and suffered a catastrophic head injury.
He was driven to a freestanding emergency room before being transferred to a local trauma center due to the severity of his condition. A police source later told a local outlet that the teenager was not expected to survive. What led to the fall is still under investigation.
In a statement, San Antonio Police extended sympathy to the victim’s family, friends and loved ones, calling the incident a “tragic” and “preventable” event.
“We encourage everyone celebrating to follow traffic laws, stay inside of your vehicles and follow directions from the officers who are there to keep everyone safe,” SAPD said.
As the investigation continues, the Spurs’ Game 6 victory—normally the kind of night that ends in noise, lights and streets packed with fans—has instead been overshadowed by a grim reminder of how quickly celebration can turn dangerous.

That’s so sad. Why do people ride on stuff during those honking parades…
I don’t get it, if he fell from a car wouldn’t he just be knocked out? They always say “brain dead” but like… how does that even happen from a fall at a celebration? Either way prayers for the fam.
He was on top of the vehicle, right? That’s wild. But also I swear these cops show up late to those crowds sometimes, like nobody stops it. They say preventable like it’s that simple. I mean people get hyped and think it’s safe.
Brain dead?? So they were trying to say he died but didn’t use that word?? And what if the driver was going too fast on Southwest Military or something, like honking doesn’t mean safe. I saw something on Twitter saying it was an accident with a pole or curb, not even sure. Tragic no matter what though.
