TalkTalk Hit With Ovo Lawsuit Over 2022 Broadband Deal

There’s a particular kind of stress that builds slowly, the kind you only notice when it’s already in your inbox. And in the UK broadband world, where customers can churn fast, that stress is now turning into a lawsuit.

Misryoum newsroom reported that Debt-strained internet provider TalkTalk is being sued by Ovo Energy after a 2022 deal went sour. The agreement saw TalkTalk acquire Ovo’s base of 135,000 (approximately) former SSE Phone & Broadband customers for an undisclosed sum. The timeline is already messy, and what makes this case stick in people’s minds is how quickly “commercial” problems can become very real for actual households.

Just to recap the chain of events: Ovo originally acquired SSE’s household energy and broadband business for £500m in January 2020. But that deal arrived right before the UK energy market got hit by a tsunami of problems—first from the COVID-19 pandemic, then from surging energy prices. Ovo itself, which continues to grapple with financial strains even today, ended up cutting lots of jobs and re-focusing toward their core energy business.

There’s also a key operational detail buried in the background. Note that SSE’s internet and phone customers were at the time provided by Vodafone’s wholesale platform. Then, despite the deal supposedly reaching completion in October 2022, problems soon began to emerge. Misryoum editorial desk noted that, according to the deal structure, TalkTalk had obligations that included an upfront sum and additional payments linked to performance milestones.

But the dispute surfaced after large numbers of customers left the service—basically undermining the value of the agreement. TalkTalk then refused to make the remaining payment, arguing, in effect, that the milestone logic didn’t hold up once the churn hit. If you’ve ever tried to troubleshoot a home connection that keeps dropping, you’ll understand the frustration: it’s rarely one single moment; it’s a pattern that spreads.

The case itself was filed on 24th March 2026 (LM-2026-000119). It’s set to be heard in the London Circuit Commercial Court. The defendants named include TalkTalk Finco Limited, TalkTalk Holdings Limited and Origin Communications Limited (Origin Broadband). And because UK legal processes can be slow—especially with complex corporate structures—it may be a while before anyone hears an outcome that’s anything more than procedural.

Misryoum has asked both Ovo Energy and TalkTalk to comment and await their response, although it’s not uncommon for companies in a legal dispute to decline such requests. UPDATE 13th April 2026 @ 10am: TalkTalk declined to comment, while Ovo itself merely confirmed that the dispute relates to funds that it says are owed to OVO for the sale of the telecoms business in 2022. Whether that’s the whole story—actually, it might not be. The rest is going to depend on what the court decides is “performance,” and what the numbers show when the customers keep leaving.
