Switzerland tops world rankings as US misses top 10
Switzerland tops – Switzerland claimed first place in the 2026 “Best Countries” rankings, released Thursday. The list used a more data-driven method, and several European nations dominated the top 10, while the United States finished below expectations, with an uneven showing ac
Switzerland has once again taken the No. 1 spot in the world’s best country rankings, and this year’s results come with a twist: the United States didn’t even make the top 10.
The 2026 rankings were released Thursday by US News & World Report in partnership with the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.. Unlike previous versions that relied on perceptions from expert and business surveys. this year’s edition dropped that approach in favor of a data-driven methodology.
Researchers evaluated 100 countries across eight categories: governance. culture and tourism. civic health. economic development. health. infrastructure. opportunity. and the natural environment.. They also included 24 subcategories, spanning areas such as healthcare, public safety, labor markets, poverty, and wealth.
The outcome skewed toward Europe, where both high-profile and less-heralded destinations leaned strongly in the data. And while the United States and Japan are usually among the most recognizable names on global “best” lists, neither landed in the top 10.
Evan Comen, US News senior data editor, pointed to the core reason the US fell short: the country’s performance is uneven when measured in data-heavy areas.
“The US is No. 2 in economic development, No. 1 in culture and tourism,” Comen said. “But then these advantages are offset by weaker performance in some of the more data-heavy categories that wouldn’t really be reflected in perceptions; things like health, infrastructure, and civic health.”
Switzerland’s climb, by contrast, looks broad and consistent.. For another consecutive year, the Central European country ranked No.. 1 on the Best Countries list.. It also topped categories such as economic development and governance, while placing second in opportunity, culture and tourism.. The Swiss scored strongly across additional areas including education, entrepreneurship, solo travel, digital nomadism, modern livability, and quality of life.
Europe’s dominance was visible throughout the top tier.. Denmark placed second overall. ranking first in infrastructure and governance and scoring high in modern urban livability. education. entrepreneurship. and overall quality of life.. Sweden ranked third and finished first for a comfortable retirement. while also placing fourth in governance and third in opportunity and sixth in civic health.
Germany took fourth overall, landing third in economic development, fourth in culture and tourism, and seventh among the best countries for raising children. The Netherlands rose to fifth, ranking third in governance, seventh in eco-tourism and infrastructure, and eighth in economic development.
Finland entered the top 10 at eighth, finishing first for modern urban livability, fourth for infrastructure, and fifth for civic health.. Norway ranked sixth, with second place in health and fifth in opportunity and governance.. Austria was ninth. with 14th finishes in both culture and tourism and economic development. and a 21st ranking for modern urban livability and quality of life.
The United Kingdom was seventh. scoring third in culture and tourism and fourth in economic development. alongside strong marks for infrastructure and opportunity.. Luxembourg followed close behind at ninth overall. after being ranked third in infrastructure. sixth in opportunity. seventh in governance. and ninth in starting a business.
Further down the global rankings, the United States finished at 18.. It had a population of 342.4 million and GDP of $29.3 trillion. and it still showed its strengths: it led in cultural tourism and was a major performer in economic development.. But the placement reflects that it struggled in categories such as health and infrastructure. where it doesn’t rank in the top 20.
Japan landed at 17 overall and, while it remains globally recognized for culture and tourism, it placed lower across several measured areas beyond health and civic health, where it finished fifth and second respectively.
US News also reported population data for each country from the US Census Bureau. with GDP figures sourced from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).. The full top 20 list included South Korea at 20. Canada at 19. the United States at 18. Japan at 17. and then a sequence of European-led placements rising steadily into Switzerland’s No.. 1 position.
