Swashbuckling ‘The Princess Bride’ musical will stage pre-Broadway tryout in Chicago next July
The anticipated new Broadway musical “The Princess Bride” is swashbuckling its way to Chicago, with a premiere at the James M. Nederlander Theatre next July.
The highly anticipated remake of William Goldman’s novel and the 1980s fantasy film by Rob Reiner promises to maintain the sword fighting and romance from the past with a fresh cast and an all-star creative team.
“The Princess Bride” is aiming to be Broadway’s next must-see musical, with a book by Tony Award winner Bob Martin (“The Drowsy Chaperone”) and Tony-nominee Rick Elice (“Jersey Boys”), music and lyrics by Oscar-winning composers Kristen Anderson-Lopez (“Frozen”) and EGOT winner Robert Lopez (“Frozen,” “The Book of Mormon”), direction by Tony Award winner Alex Timbers (Moulin Rouge!) and choreography by Tony Award winner Andy Blankenbuehler (“Hamilton,” “In the Heights”).

The enchanting story follows young lovers trying to make it to happily-ever-after, in a journey that includes a sweet-natured giant, a Spanish swordsman, a six-fingured scoundrel and a cast of funny and fantastical characters in the fictional world of Florin.
Broadway in Chicago partnered with producer Jeffrey Seller for the production. Seller, who has a catalog of successful shows that includes “Rent,” “In the Heights” and “Hamilton,” and is the only producer to mount two Pulitzer Prize winning musicals (“Hamilton” and “Rent”). His shows have also earned 22 Tony Awards.
“The Princess Bride” is slated to run July 19-August 22, 2027. Tickets go on sale next month. Group tickets of 10 or more are on sale now.
