Summer House’s KJ Dillard Hospitalized, Then Diagnosed

Summer House star KJ Dillard revealed during the Season 10 reunion that after struggling with anxiety and self-harm, he was hospitalized for a week, later entered recovery, and was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder.

When “Summer House” came back around for its Season 10 reunion. KJ Dillard didn’t keep his mental health journey on the surface. During part one. taped back in April. he laid out a private sequence of crisis and repair—one that included a hospital stay. months of recovery. and a diagnosis he says he’s now facing head-on.

In a cast sit-down hosted by Andy Cohen. Dillard was asked about fan reaction to his mental health struggles on the show. where he has addressed anxiety. He said he “didn’t expect” the support from viewers. He described going through “some heavy stuff mentally” after filming wrapped. even as people were responding to what they’d seen.

“I actually had to go to the hospital for self-harm,” Dillard said. “I was there for a week. Mia [Calabrese] and Ciara [Miller] were there almost every day.”

After that week, he said he moved into recovery. “Then I went to recovery, and that solidified it for me,” he said. “I was there for a few months. I got to focus on myself.” He also connected the moment to a pattern he recognized about himself: “I needed that. because. I think. my whole life I distracted myself and ran away from my issues instead of facing them head-on.”.

Dillard told Cohen and his co-stars that he’s “better” now. He said he’s in therapy and taking medication. During his time in the hospital, he added, he was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder.

The Mayo Clinic describes BPD as “a mental health condition that affects the way people feel about themselves and others, making it hard to function in everyday life. It includes a pattern of unstable, intense relationships, as well as impulsiveness and an unhealthy way of seeing themselves.”

His gratitude—spoken plainly, without trying to make it easier—was a major note of the conversation. “I’m grateful that I’m here alive because I could have not been,” Dillard said. He also credited the people who showed up around him: “I’m thankful for just like. the support of my friends. Like, everyone here has somewhat shown support in their own way. So, I appreciate that.”.

He then turned to the audience. Dillard said he feels encouraged that viewers have embraced his journey, because it’s his reality. “Because it’s my truth. I’m not gonna not be honest about what I go through, especially if it can help others.”

The Season 10 reunion continues with part two airing next Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET on Bravo, with the episode available to stream on Peacock the following day.
