Suffolk corrections officer killed after stopping to help stranded motorist in Boxford

The 51-year-old was struck Monday evening while assisting another driver and later died at a hospital, authorities said.
A Suffolk corrections officer was killed after he stopped to help another driver along I-95 in Boxford on Monday, authorities said.
According to Massachusetts State Police, they received a call for a pedestrian struck on I-95 southbound at 8:30 p.m. Police found the pedestrian, later identified as Brett Martin, 51, of Norton, with life-threatening injuries.
First responders transported him to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The Essex County District Attorney’s Office is investigating the incident.
In a statement posted online, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department said that Martin was attempting to assist a stranded motorist when he was struck by a motor vehicle.
Martin began his career with the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department in February of 2008. He was most recently stationed at a security post in the kitchen at the House of Correction.
“Corporal Martin was a dedicated, thoughtful, and courageous member of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department,” the statement said. He “exhibited a selflessness, care, and concern for others that was evident to all who knew him.”
“His legacy of bravery and self-sacrifice will endure,” the statement continued.
