Streisand skips – Barbra Streisand announced she will not attend Cannes’ closing ceremony where she was set to receive an honorary Palme d’Or, citing a knee injury and doctor’s advice. Festival organizers said they will still honor her in her absence.
CANNES, France — Barbra Streisand said she will not attend the Cannes Film Festival’s closing ceremony later this week, where she was scheduled to receive an honorary Palme d’Or, after sustaining a knee injury.
In a statement shared as part of the festival’s communications, Streisand said she is unable to travel.. “On the advice of my doctors. as I continue recovering from a knee injury. I am sadly unable to attend the Festival de Cannes this year. ” she wrote.. She added that she remains honored by the recognition and had been looking forward to celebrating the films at the festival’s 79th edition.
Streisand also said she was disappointed not to be present with the colleagues she admires and noted she had hoped to return to France. a country she said she has always loved.. “I was also very much looking forward to spending time with colleagues whom I so admire — and. of course. returning to France. a place I have always loved. ” she said.. “My heartfelt thanks to the Festival, and to everyone who continues to support and champion the art of cinema.”
Festival organizers said they would still honor Streisand despite her absence, including through the press release that carried her statement.
The timing of the tribute underscores how Cannes is already distributing the honorary Palme d’Or this year: Peter Jackson received one during the opening ceremony, and John Travolta was surprised with another ahead of the premiere of his directorial debut, “Propeller One-Way Night Coach,” on Friday.
