Steelers OC Angelichio backs Rodgers as mentor
Brian Angelichio says Aaron Rodgers’ arrival gives the Steelers four quarterbacks, and that the veteran’s feedback and willingness to help can only help younger players—even if reps are tighter for Will Howard and Drew Allar.
When Aaron Rodgers officially joined the Steelers’ roster, the quarterback room changed overnight—now with four players competing for practice reps under the same system. Veteran Mason Rudolph remains there, along with second-year QB Will Howard and rookie Drew Allar.
Offensive coordinator Brian Angelichio was asked Tuesday about the trade-off that comes with having more quarterbacks on the roster. The obvious concern is simple: fewer reps to go around for the younger players. Angelichio didn’t buy it.
“You can never have enough quarterbacks,” Angelichio said, via Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “With the system that’s in place here, it’s great that we have four quarterbacks. We have a plan on how all those guys are going to get reps.”
That confidence isn’t coming from guesswork. Angelichio is familiar with Rodgers from their time together with the Packers. when Angelichio served as Green Bay’s tight ends coach from 2016-2018. Now, with Rodgers in Pittsburgh, Angelichio leaned on that shared history to explain what the Steelers are getting beyond snaps.
With Rodgers potentially entering the final season of his career, Angelichio praised his willingness to help his teammates. “Aaron’s such a great mentor … His feedback and the information he provides, you can’t beat that,” Angelichio said, via Brooke Pryor of ESPN. “He is very willing to help the players … I think that certainly is a big plus for us.”.
There’s a practical reality under the praise: Rodgers’ presence will likely affect how quickly Howard and Allar see the reps they want. But Angelichio framed the approach as deliberate—built around a plan, not a scramble. If Rodgers is set for at least one more ride with the Steelers in 2026. the full impact of that mentorship may not land on the stat sheet or the field in the immediate future—at least not until later.
