Steam Controller easter egg: Wilhelm scream on drop

A newly spotted Steam Controller easter egg uses haptics to mimic a Wilhelm scream when dropped, with a reset timeout.

If your reflexes are good but your aim is not, there’s a new reason to handle your Steam Controller more carefully. Reports and video demos suggest the gamepad can emit a Wilhelm scream the moment it takes a tumble, turning an ordinary drop into something far more theatrical.

The discovery began with a Reddit user. u/RF3D19. who shared that the controller has a hidden easter egg tied to the experience of being dropped.. The claim was later confirmed by additional reporting. bringing the oddity into the open for anyone still wondering whether it was real or internet mischief.

What makes the stunt unusual is how it’s implemented.. The Steam Controller doesn’t include a traditional built-in speaker. so it can’t play an audio clip in the usual way.. Instead, it simulates the classic scream using its haptic motors, effectively turning vibration patterns into a recognizable “scream” effect.

There may also be a timing limit involved.. Commenters on the original thread estimate that the easter egg needs roughly about a minute to reset before it will “cry out” again.. That suggests the controller isn’t designed to trigger repeatedly in a loop. but rather to have a window in which the effect can fire once and then cool down.

Even with that reset idea, the reports also note that the controller won’t always scream every time it’s dropped. In other words, it appears there’s a condition beyond just taking a spill, so the effect may be more finicky than the simplest “drop it, it screams” headline implies.

Naturally, once more users saw the posts, the temptation to test the feature grew quickly.. One commenter. u/itsactuallynot. described the impulse many people would have to “hoist” their controller and let go. while others weighed in with skepticism.. Another user, u/havoc1428, wondered whether the claim might be a form of trolling rather than a real easter egg.

The good news for anyone concerned about damage is that the experiment doesn’t necessarily require a hard surface. The reports indicate you can try it on something soft, such as a bed or pillow, which lowers the risk of actually breaking hardware while still letting users verify the effect.

For people without the device in hand. demonstrations are available as well. including a video showing what happens when the controller is dropped.. If you’re curious. the easiest way to satisfy that curiosity may be to watch first and only test with soft landings after you know you’re seeing something real.

For Misryoum readers, the story is a reminder that even devices built for routine gaming can still hide small surprises.. Here. the surprise is less about flashy sound hardware and more about how vibration can be shaped into recognizable “audio-like” feedback. making the Steam Controller a rare example where the joke might be built into the physics of everyday clumsiness.

  1. Wait I thought the Wilhelm scream was like, an audio sample. But it’s just haptics?? So my controller’s just gonna torture me with vibrating drama now. Great.

  2. If it needs like a minute to reset then it’s basically a timer bomb for your hands? I’m not even reading it right but still… I dropped mine once and it didn’t do anything, so either it’s not real or I got the “silent model” or something.

  3. This is why I can’t have cool gadgets, I’m gonna end up screaming at my Steam Controller like it owes me money. Also the article says no built-in speaker but then it’s still a Wilhelm scream, so like… how are they hearing it? Is it in the game audio or through the vibrations to your ears like those bone conduction things? idk. I’d rather just not drop it at all.
