Status of Lake Travis football player taken to hospital Monday unclear

The Lake Travis football team held a meeting Tuesday morning and players went through “light activities” a day after a student-athlete suffered a seizure during practice.

Lake Travis officials did not provide specifics regarding the status of a player who “suffered a serious health emergency” Monday and was transported by helicopter to a local hospital. Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services public information officer Shannon Koersterer confirmed Tuesday in a statement to the American-Statesman that ATCEMS and Travis County Star Flight responded to a situation Monday morning at the school for a “reported seizure.” 

Cavaliers football coach Hank Carter directed questions Tuesday from the Statesman to Lake Travis ISD executive director of communications and community relations Marco Alvarado. Alvarado said the district had no update from the social media post Carter made Monday informing the public that practice had been canceled after the incident. 

Alvarado confirmed the Cavaliers held a team meeting and athletes did some work Tuesday morning. Temperatures were around 85 degrees about 8 a.m. Monday, as practice was beginning, and around 86 degrees Tuesday.

As of Tuesday morning, Alvarado was under the impression the student “was still receiving medical attention.” Alvarado declined to provide the player’s name and did not confirm whether the player was still at the hospital or back home. 

“ATCEMS Medics initiated advanced life support and called for STARFlight, who transported a teenaged patient to Dell Children’s Medical Center in critical condition,” Koesterer said. “We’re unable to provide any updates on the patient’s condition as they are no longer in our care.”
