Stargate Reboot Cancelled as Fans Return to SG-1

Prime Video has cancelled its planned Stargate reboot, but Stargate SG-1 is surging again on streaming in parts of Europe, including France on 6play—underscoring how stubborn fan demand can outlast a shutdown.

The Stargate revival was meant to be a long-awaited new chapter—but Prime Video has pulled the plug, cancelling the reboot after extensive development efforts.

The decision lands with particular weight for fans who still carry the franchise through years of sci-fi churn. The original Stargate began as a 1994 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film directed by Roland Emmerich. starring Kurt Russell. James Spader. Jaye Davidson. Alexis Cruz. Mili Avital. and Viveca Lindfors. The story followed humans traveling the cosmos through an alien wormhole device as Earth representatives searched for new alien allies and weapons of defense. Within two years, Stargate SG-1 launched and went on to run for 10 seasons, building an intensely loyal audience.

That audience has kept the franchise alive far beyond its original run. expanding into spin-offs including Stargate Atlantis. which starred Jason Momoa and Joe Flanigan. Stargate Universe. and Stargate Origins. Prime Video’s plans were framed as a first move to reopen Stargate for the first time in fifteen years—but development on the new series has now been cancelled. according to reports.

The reason given for Prime Video’s decision was concern that the reboot would appeal mainly to the existing Stargate fan base rather than broader audiences. Plot details from the cancelled reboot were never revealed, leaving fans with a lot of unanswered “what could have been.”

Still, the cancellation doesn’t mean the Stargate door is permanently shut. The rights to Stargate are held by Amazon, after Amazon acquired MGM Studios in 2022, which means the franchise could be revisited at a later date if the creative direction changes.

The reboot team was also substantial. Martin Gero (Blindspot) was set to lead the project. a veteran who had worked across all three previous Stargate television series. The reboot was planned to be executive-produced by Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell for Safehouse Pictures. alongside Dean Devlin and Emmerich. Longtime Stargate veterans Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi were expected to serve as consulting producers.

As the reboot stalls, one piece of the franchise’s current momentum is coming from the very series that defined its legacy: Stargate SG-1. Data from FlixPatrol shows SG-1 cracking the Top 10 slots on streaming in some European countries, including France on the streaming platform 6play.

Those numbers suggest the story didn’t end when the reboot was supposed to begin—if anything, the cancellation has only sharpened the contrast between what the streaming market might demand and what Stargate fans keep showing up for.
