Jaylon Hutchings has re-signed with the Calgary Stampeders on a three-year deal, returning ahead of the season opener after last season’s CFL all-star production and a brief NFL reserve/futures stint with the Minnesota Vikings.
Calgary just found a major stabilizer for the front of its defence with days left before kickoff. Defensive lineman Jaylon Hutchings has put pen to paper on a three-year deal with the Calgary Stampeders, the club announced Sunday.
The 26-year-old Hutchings originally spent this offseason in the NFL picture. In January, he signed a reserve/futures contract with the Minnesota Vikings. That opportunity ended in April. when the NFL club waived him. sending him back to the CFL just as the Stampeders prepare to begin their campaign.
Hutchings is no stranger to making an impact at league speed. Listed at six-foot and 300 pounds, the Texas Tech product earned CFL all-star status last season in his first full year in the league.
His numbers tell the story of a player who consistently disrupted offences. Hutchings started 17 games and finished with 39 defensive tackles. including three tackles for loss. eight sacks. one fumble recovery. one forced fumble and two knockdowns. He also contributed in the post-season. recording a pair of sacks and a touchdown in a West semifinal loss to the B.C. Lions.
Dave Dickenson. the Stampeders’ general manager and head coach. framed the decision as more than a signing—it’s a statement about what Calgary expects from its line. “It’s great to have Hutch back,” Dickenson said in a statement. “For him to make a three-year commitment to us is a huge deal. He was a force up front for us last season and his return will further bolster our defence and make us a better team.”.
Now, the Stampeders turn their attention to the opener. Calgary opens the season Friday against the visiting Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
