Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama gives powerful speech after being named France’s captain

The San Antonio Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama recently gave a powerful speech after being named the captain of the France team.
Victor Wembanyama will be in France for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 European Qualifiers. Though already an NBA superstar, the San Antonio Spurs’ talented center was recently named the captain of the national team.
He was handed the responsibility by the French coach, along with much-needed praise for his work ethic. Wemby delivered his speech to a relatively older squad, even though he is the youngest among them.
“Do you want me to do a speech? Oh yeah? Well, honestly it’s a real honor. I know I’m the youngest here but I fully intend to lead by example. I know you guys are counting on me to get buckets, to get stops, but I also intend to do my best to carry the team. And it’s with great pleasure and a huge honor that I take on this responsibility. Thanks,” he said with a smile on his face.
Coach: “We’ve decided that Victor will be our new captain. For his exemplary attitude, for his work ethic, and for the future, for everything that awaits us. So welcome and congratulations Victor.”

The nod comes after the two-time NBA All-Star wrapped up one of his best seasons with the Spurs. Wemby led the team to the NBA Finals but could not outlast the New York Knicks, who took home the championship trophy after a 53 year drought.
During his postseason run, he averaged 23.8 points, 10.9 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks. Additionally, he won the Western Conference Finals MVP award, thanks in large part to his dominant 40-point performance against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
While a championship ring looked almost promised, the last stretch of the tournament cost Wembanyama and the Spurs the Finals series. Now with the 2026-27 season coming ahead, the Frenchman will have a good stretch of basketball action for his national team.
