Springer set for Monday return as Jays adjust

Springer on – Toronto manager John Schneider said George Springer is on track to return from the family medical emergency list as soon as Monday, with Max Scherzer expected to make additional rehab starts before activation from the injured list.

George Springer could be back as soon as Monday.

Toronto manager John Schneider said Sunday that the designated hitter is on track to return from the family medical emergency list, after the Blue Jays moved him there following a paternity leave that has now expired.

Springer, a four-time All-Star, went on the paternity list last Wednesday to welcome the birth of his third child. When that leave ended. the Blue Jays shifted him to the family medical emergency list. not because anything was wrong. Schneider said. The reason, he said, was to give their leadoff hitter more time.

Schneider expected Springer to be available for the Blue Jays’ road trip to San Francisco that begins Monday. After Toronto’s 4-0 loss to Seattle. Schneider said. “I think he’s going to travel tomorrow.” He added that the plan was tentative and needed confirmation from Springer: “That was the tentative plan. So, just got to confirm that with him.”.

The wait matters in more ways than one, because Springer’s season production has taken a hit. The 36-year-old is slashing .221/.308/.373 with eight homers and 21 RBIs.

Back on the mound, another recovery is moving through its own checkpoints. Right-hander Max Scherzer was in Seattle after making a rehab start in High-A Vancouver on Friday. Schneider confirmed the 41-year-old three-time Cy Young winner will make another rehab start—or two—before being activated off the 15-day injured list.

Schneider said Scherzer is eligible to return after being sidelined since June 17 due to back spasms. With his next steps still ahead, the Blue Jays are balancing a potential return at the plate with an additional ramp-up period for their rotation.

Between Springer’s expected return timing and Scherzer’s continued rehab, the weekend carried a message that can be felt in a clubhouse: the calendar is pushing forward, but every move has to land cleanly—starting Monday.
