With the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, we got to see Peter Parker (Tom Holland) in his element. That included a very nerdy, scientific conversation with Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), as well as Peter having to build his own inhibitor chip to help him with his evolving powers (and stop a homicidal Jean Grey, played by Sadie Sink). But that’s not all the “science Peter” fans are getting as a new issue of The Amazing Spider-Man shows just how Peter’s science prowess helps him protect New York.
Peter Parker has always been the kind of character whose can compartmentalize and talk about a million things at once. In Joe Kelly‘s latest issue of The Amazing Spider-Man, he’s doing just that. In issue #34, Kelly details how Peter’s science brain works with stunning detail. Ed McGuinness and the impressive team of artists behind this run of The Amazing Spider-Man use Peter’s ability to jump between thoughts to show readers just how quick his brain can switch from his own personal issue to the science at hand. And who better to challenge Peter’s science senses than Max Dillon aka Electro himself?
Peter is working with Agent Griffyn of Damage Control and continually tries to tell him that he can’t just go and fight a big bad. Peter is trying to take on the A-tier villains himself which does sound kind of like Yelena Belova’s (Florence Pugh) “big potatoes” vs. “small potatoes” argument used in Brand New Day but in this case, it helps Peter recognize what he needs to do to stop Electro. Putting his knowledge of currents and electricity together with Damage Control’s need to stop Max, what could go wrong?

On top of trying to stop Electro’s spree in New York, Peter has his own mess to figure out: His feelings on his cousin Cormac Crane. Aunt May is reunited with her son, a man she thought was stillborn, and Peter has to navigate his feelings of being May’s only boy and what that means with her son back in the picture. In true Peter Parker fashion, Kelly expertly weaves those issues into the story while he’s trying to stop Electro and using his science knowledge to do it. What other superhero would be talking about conduits and feeling sorry for himself? Is there something that Cormac is hiding? Or is Peter really just the jealous “little brother” this time around?
