The drama around Yung Miami’s “Spend Dat” didn’t just stay in the comments. It spilled straight into the studio—at least, that’s how producer J. White Did It chose to answer.

The controversy around the track erupted after people zeroed in on its lyrics about scamming folks and its push to spend money in abundance. India Arie. who has “The Truth” to her name. weighed in after a fan called for a boycott of the song. Arie responded on Threads that “Everything you listen to see or eat is going to influence you. ” adding. “So make wise choices y’all.” She also said the song’s viral moment was “a CRYSTAL CLEAR sign of the bigger problem.”.

At some point after the debate went viral, Arie clarified she was not calling for a boycott.

Then, on the evening of July 1, J. White Did It posted a video on Instagram showing himself dancing in a music studio to a blend of two of the artists’ songs. He mixed Yung Miami’s “Spend Dat” with Arie’s “Video.” In the footage, he’s seen singing along as he exclaimed, “Hey, heeeeey.”

Fans didn’t all read the video the same way. @kmlstyling wrote. “Provoking and trolling ppl over an opinion is actually weird. to me.” @rahjawilliamss said. “I’m still just intrigued at how ‘Spend Dat’ is where y’all draw the line…. The debate also pulled in other celebrity voices. Nicci Gilbert. the “Lovin’ me” singer. spoke about the song’s effect on the culture and noted that “fame is vapor. ” sharing a video explaining her stance. Singer Keri Hilson also weighed in allegedly: on X on July 1. she wrote a message that didn’t name names—“If music can heal. music can harm too…”.

While the internet argued, J. White stayed focused on the idea that the whole moment wasn’t worth turning into a war. Responding after catching heat online. he wrote. “Y’all taking this way too serious 😂. ” and added. “I love both songs.” He continued. “India is a legend. and she’s entitled to her opinion.
