Spain look to bounce back from Cape Verde shock against Saudi Arabia

Spain vs – Spain return to Atlanta on Sunday hoping to move on from their goalless draw with Cape Verde, with Lamine Yamal still limited after a hamstring injury. Saudi Arabia arrive high on confidence after a 1-1 opener against Uruguay, while Opta gives Spain an overwhe

The Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta is set for kickoff at 12pm local time on Sunday, with Spain and Saudi Arabia meeting in FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H. For Spain, the moment carries a familiar kind of pressure: not just to win, but to prove the first match wasn’t the version they had planned.

Spain begin the day trying to respond to a shock goalless draw with debutants Cape Verde. They took 27 shots in that opener yet failed to score, leaving the pre-tournament favourites suddenly questioned over a worrying lack of attacking edge.

Saudi Arabia, though, don’t arrive as the comfortable opponent Spain were expected to face. Their mood in the camp has stayed upbeat after a 1-1 draw with former world champions Uruguay in their opener. a result described by coach Georgios ‌Donis as a “booster for our psychology”. Donis only took over the team two months before the World Cup. but Saudi Arabia still managed to keep themselves in the knockout hunt with a point.

The stakes for Spain feel even more personal through one name: Lamine Yamal. The 18-year-old, who is often among the goals or assists, has had his minutes limited while recovering from a hamstring injury. He was named on the bench and came on only in the 71st minute against Cape Verde.

Spain’s supporters had been hoping that would mean he’d be back in the starting lineup for this match. He won’t. Speaking to Spanish public television TVE on Friday. Yamal said: “I’m fine. I’m feeling good. but it’s too soon. it’s unnecessary; I’m still settling in – it’s not the right time to play a full match yet – but I can play for as many minutes as the manager wants.”.

He added: “I want to be on the pitch; at the end of the day, even if you know you can’t play for 90 minutes, you always want to get out there and help the team.”

That restraint lands in a bigger narrative for Spain. Their wider “golden generation” — featuring Yamal, Pedri, Ferran Torres and others — is aiming to inspire Spain to their second World Cup title after back-to-back round-of-16 exits in recent editions.

Saudi Arabia’s confidence is shaped by what they have already shown in the tournament, and by history. In the 2022 World Cup, Saudi Arabia caused a major surprise in the opening round by defeating eventual champions Argentina. At this World Cup. they are making their seventh appearance in North America and registered their best result in 1994 with a run to the round of 16.

Even so, predictions point strongly toward Spain. Opta’s supercomputer has given Spain an 86.7 percent probability of winning against Saudi Arabia, who have a 4.3 percent chance of winning. The model puts the draw at 9 percent.

After Spain’s opening goalless draw, they have slipped to fourth in Opta’s prediction list, with France now the most favourite (15.43 percent). Spain’s probability of winning the tournament is now 12.04 percent.

The group itself is far from settled. Spain, Saudi Arabia, Uruguay and Cape Verde are all in Group H. Each team has one point, with Uruguay on top due to the highest team conduct score. Saudi Arabia are second, Spain are third, and Cape Verde are bottom. With all teams able to advance, the group remains wide open.

In the format heading into the knockout stage, the top two teams from each of the 12 groups — plus the eight best third-placed teams — proceed to the round of 32, introduced at the World Cup for the first time.

Spain’s path to a stronger start begins with their recent form. In their last five matches, Spain’s record reads D-W-D-D-W, while Saudi Arabia’s is D-D-W-L-L. Spain have a better record than Saudi Arabia in that stretch.

For Spain, the run includes a goalless draw with Cape Verde in their first World Cup game, a 3-1 win over Peru, and a 1-1 draw with Iraq in June friendlies. They also drew 0-0 with Egypt and beat Serbia 3-0 in March.

There is also a clear head-to-head history. Spain have met Saudi Arabia three times, winning each time. Their last meeting came in September 2012, when Spain thrashed Saudi Arabia 5-0. Sunday’s match is only the second time they meet at the World Cup: their first face-off at the 2006 edition ended in a 1-0 group-stage victory for Spain.

For Spain, the lineup situation will be watched closely, especially around Yamal’s availability. Spain’s predicted lineup is (4-3-3): Simon; Llorente, Cubarsi, Laporte, Cucurella; Ruiz, Rodri, Pedri; Ferran, Olmo, Gavi.
