Spain silence England as automatic 2027 World Cup hopes fade

Spain 4 – England 0 Spain’s women took a huge step towards automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil after thrashing England’s Lionesses in Real Mallorca’s Son Moix Stadium on Friday night. England went into the match as leaders of Group A3, but Spain’s win gives them an equal number of points – twelve – with one round of matches to go and a superior head-to-head record. The Lionesses could have afforded a one-nil loss and have been favourites for automatic qualification, but

any hope of this was blown away by a Spain side who totally dominated the match. Patri Guijarro opened the scoring for Spain after 19 minutes. Alexia Putellas made it two before half-time and then added her second and Spain’s third after the break before Claudia Pins added a fourth on 78 minutes to make it a sorry night for Sarina Wiegman’s team. The Lionesses managed only two shots on target and had to thank Hannah Hampton for restricting Spain to four. This is the

heaviest defeat England have suffered under Wiegman, and it could have been worse; they were totally outplayed. Spain play Iceland away on Tuesday, while England play Ukraine at home. Both are expected to win these final group matches, which will mean Spain qualify automatically and England have to go to the play-offs
