On the heels of a June 24 freight train derailment and a power loss near East Chicago, Indiana, South Shore Line riders are being told to expect continued holiday service—at least for the rest of the week.
South Shore Line trains will keep running on a holiday schedule through Friday. The Lakeshore Corridor and Monon Corridor will maintain that schedule through July 3, according to a South Shore Line service update.
The disruption hasn’t ended there. July 4 and 5 will remain holiday service as previously scheduled.
For passengers who rely on key connections, the most immediate change is transportation between two stations. A temporary shuttle service—running between the Miller and Hegewisch stations—will continue through Sunday.
Those temporary changes trace back to the derailment and power loss reported near East Chicago and Gary, Indiana. South Shore Line says all service was suspended after the June 24 incident, and that service resumed on June 25 on a holiday schedule.
The schedule recovery has come in stages. Partial service was restored to the Monon Corridor on Thursday, and both corridors reopened Friday using a holiday schedule. That reopening included busing between Miller and Hegewisch.
South Shore Line also spelled out the limits of the bus shuttle: buses will make all station stops, but bikes are not allowed on the buses.
The carrier is also coordinating with Metra for ticketing. Metra will continue to accept South Shore Line tickets for passengers who use Metra Electric District train service, South Shore Line said in its alert.
