Plumes of thick black smoke rolled over South Gate on Sunday afternoon, turning the sky dark as firefighters battled a large industrial fire at a tire recycling facility.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department said it responded at 2:40 p.m. to reports of a fire at the facility in the 11800 block of Industrial Avenue. When crews arrived, they took a defensive position.

County Supervisor Janice Hahn said a shelter-in-place order was issued for the surrounding community. urging people to stay indoors with their pets and keep their doors and windows closed. The South Gate Police Department also asked residents to avoid the areas of Gardendale and Industrial streets. saying first responders from the Los Angeles County Fire Department and the South Gate Police Department were at the scene.

Firefighters and residents were left in an anxious waiting state as authorities worked to contain the blaze. There was no information provided about what sparked the fire or whether anyone was inside the facility when it began.
